I ask this because I frequently read something like:
"Destroy is the only viable end because it was the main goal to destroy the Reapers from the start."
But for me the main goal of the series was never to destroy the Reapers, but to save the galaxy and my loved ones.
Am I alone with this?
When I say goal I of course mean the goal of your/my shepard.

It depends on the person on what he's willing to sacrifice for peace, another thing borrowed from Deus Ex. The simplest way to put it:
Lives? Destroy
Freedom? Control
Individuality? Synthesis.

How come nobody says: "To obtain Reaper's power by... well, somehow synthesysing with them and learn more about their origin"? Sarcasm, obviously
This.
I'd guess that less than 5% of players pre-ME3 release would have freely responded "oh, synthesize organic and synthetic life...DUH" or "actually, i've been thinking about it and i think that controlling the reapers would be quite nice" or "i'm hoping to be presented with an absurd series of choices- at which point, I have every intention of refusing all of them" or "all i want is reaper storytime, where I get to figure out where exactly they reside in dark space and who their daddy is."
Personally, I wanted to destroy the reapers, save my friends/squadmates/LI, and watch all my decisions play out in a glorious save-the-galaxy scene with the added icing on the cake of maybe a rebuilding-the-galaxy DLC as a way to give players even more closure to the universe.
But DANG the ending I got was so...not that.
(apologies for the quasi-hostile tone, just sayin')
