Why No Daggers?

All the shortsword are called "daggers" but I've yet to see one. I suppose only the PC users will be able to experience daggers through mods, eh?

Quite a few daggers measured over a foot long throughout history. If you do your research you'll come to find out that most daggers weren't what you would equate with a pocket knife. And with that said, it's a videogame, everything is oversized.
I wanted to type the exact same thing. A dagger is not necessarily a butter knife or a letter opener.

Correct on both counts
A "dagger" is technically just a double bladed knife! What classifies as a dagger and it's appearance is mostly a cultural thing. For instance, a Roman Pugio would generally have a blade that was only 6 to 10 inches long, but 5 inches wide while a Japanese Tanto would have a longer blade (a foot or more) but only 2 inches wide.
Anyway, as sinosleep said, it's a video game. If it wasn't, fighting a guy in plate armor with a giant sword would be a bad idea if you were armed with just "daggers". :innocent:

Also, I don't think "it's a video game" is a very good response. The only video game I've played that had retardedly oversized things was Fable. Also, I expect a bit more from Black Isle/Bioware after such successes (when it comes to daggers

PS: Daggers aren't really meant to be concealable (or at least that's not their original intended purpose).
For instance, the ancient Romans would usually be equipped with a scuta (shield), several pila (javelins/spears), a gladius (a 2 1/2 foot long sword) and a pugia (about a 7 to 11 inch long dagger). The pugia was just meant for close, really close fighting because you only needed to get about 2 inches of it into someone in a good spot to kill them (it has a very wide, leafed blade).

When you consider that the daggers of DA:O should be modelled on Dirks, Misericordes and Main-Gauches the daggers are too long.
It's a fantasy world, who's to say what they should call things?

What you perceive as daggers is what is referred to in DAO as the stabbity knife of doom
Yes they are similar to what is referred to as short swords in other games, but as others have said this isn't one of those other games.
THIS... IS... THEDAS!

Oversized indeed. Seems to be a habit Bioware has picked up. Just look at the thermos-sized lightsaber hilts in SWTORsinosleep wrote...
