I'd just like to say a special thanks to David Gaider and Chris Priestly for coming to DragonCon in Atlanta this year.  So great to have some Bioware representation for the new video game track.  THanks for being such an awesome guy especially in the Sex in Videogames panel tonight.  Best line of the night...

Wish I could be there, I always liked Gaider, and I would like to meet Priestly just to see if he is as confrontational in person as he is on the internet, not that it would be a bad thing if he was, I would actually gain respect for him.

Of course there is always the chance I could run into Mac Walters or Casey Hudson, and I would have to kick them in the junk based solely on principle, that would cause so many problems and I would have to spend a night in jail, so its probably best that I dont have the time to go to conventions.

Yeah, I heard DG really delivered a great talk on sex in games. I'd love to hear/see it. Anyone know if it is or will be available to the public? I need to start going to conventions, and also cosplaying.

As far as I know Bioware said they weren't going to be recording it, but I'm sure it's up somewhere.

Yeah it was pretty interesting. It's too bad the room that they had it in wasn't bigger so that more people could get in to see it. The line to get in stretched across the whole floor of the hotel, and even looped back and around itself a couple of times. Hopefully someone took video of it, so that others can see it.

What was Gaider's general line of thought for sex in video games? And was the panel on showing explicit sex, or having insinuated sex or a generally sleazy atmosphere in games?

I was there! I attended every panel he was on, and before anyone asks, no he didn't talk about DA3.

He did mention his thoughts on the reaction to the ME3 ending, and he said he is grateful to work for a company that cares about the fans so much that they would be willing to create something special for them, despite having no real financial incentive to do so.

The Sex in Videogames panel was the best by far.  It was not only hilarious and entertaining, but also thought-provoking.

David was the only panelist and he showed a slideshow that went through a quick history of the love-interests he created and his thought-process behind them.

There was nothing graphic, in fact he even started the panel by saying, "If you came for boobies, you will be disappointed."  He is a very funny guy.

It was more about sexuality and the depiction of women and non-straight romances in games and the reaction by the media and fans.  He talked about his infamous response to the forumite who thought Bioware wasn't appealing to the "Straight Male Gamer" and talked about how the general public still thinks games are for kids and the industry thinks games are mainly played by college-aged straight males.  He showed surveys and statistics that proved both of those assumptions wrong and showed that a huge majority of gamers are in fact women and many are 30+ years old.

He took a lot of questions from the audience.

The one that stuck out was someone asking about Transgender chracters and romances.  David responded by saying that if they were to implement something like that, they would have to be very careful not to include a character who is transgender just for the sake of novelty.  He emphasized that Bioware was very against tokenism when creating characters.

Another question, two i think, dealt with the idea of implementing polyamorous relationships.  David said that he is reluctant to implement them only because it would be really difficult to script.  He said that if they were to implement them, he would want it to be done right, with all characters involved acknowledging the relationship.

There was one question about the double-standard people had between Zevran and Isabela.  David mentioned that he was disappointed by the amount of "****-shaming" Isabela received by people compared to Zevran.

There was obviously a lot more to the hour-long panel, but those were the highlights for me at least.

He ended by saying everyone of the LGBT community should never be ashamed of who they are because they are natural.  It was really touching and you could tell everyone in the audience appreciated hearing his thoughts on the issue.

David Gaider is a wonderful writer and person, and Bioware should be really proud to have such a caring and talented staff member.  I hope his first experience at Dragon*Con was a good one and he will return next year!

P.S. Next year, they HAVE to get a bigger room for the Meet Bioware panel!  Did they not realize just how popular their games are?!

I stood out in one of the lobbies with a group of people talking to Gaider after a panel. I kept grilling him on video game writing and thoughts of what Bioware could do. I got so wrapped up in asking about the writing, I asked him a very stupid question in the end about Mass Effect. lulz. Whoops. Sorry, Gaider. Got too caught up in my own thoughts with that one. (pass the question to the ME team though if you can...or if you remember)

But, despite whatever I think of Bioware and the direction they've taken, I do respect the man. He wasn't afraid to answer any question thrown at him and had pretty reasonable explanations and answers. Thank you for that!

I also had a chat with Chris and the vibe I got from it was that he's trying hard to fix the disconnect between the fan base and Bioware. I wish him the best of luck with that.

Thanks for all of that guys. I actually skipped the Fantasy World Building panel to talk to you guys. xD It was worth it.

Oh, so he was talking about equality again. Thanks for the reply, i appreciate it.

And i highly doubt the majority of gamers are 30 year old women. I don't know how he got those statistics.

I suspect the poster misspoke and meant to use a different word.

I find much of what Gaider says irritating, but he's an ally I can appreciate in the matter of sexuality.

I think he's talking about gamers in general. Not like women who play Halo or CoD or Mass Effect or anything, but women do play a lot of casual games. Say, AngryBirds, The Sims, etc. There are some facts about how many women play games here: http://www.theesa.co.../gameplayer.asp

EDIT: Not saying that they're a huge majority or anything, though.

I think he meant that RPGs in general have a higher percentage of female gamers than other genres like shooters.

It was pretty funny when the Dragon Age group in the parade spotted him and asked why he hated the characters. He responded by handing out water bottles and hanging out at the group photoshoot, which was pretty cool.

 ** awesome summary **
!

Txs for that!

I found the source for gaiders numbers, it is probably this recent survey

In 2012, the average gamer is approximately 30 years old. That’s a
slightly steep drop from 2011, when the average gamer was a ripened 37.
And in 2012, approximately 47% of gamers are women. That’s a pretty big
leap from 2011 when the average was 42%.

I am fairly positive those were the numbers shown so I think that is the study he used.

I forgot to mention one very funny moment.  One girl asked why Varric was not a love-interest.  David said that he swears that if he knew Varric would have come across so sexy and suave in the final product, he would have made him romanceable.

Someone then yelled "What about Oghren?!"  Everyone laughed and David looked at her with disgust.  He said he was horrified at the thought of smelling Oghren's beer-breath while he licked the Warden's face, lol.
