Sten gets hated on with a passion on these forums. I bring him along every playthrough any way. You get him early, by the time you get Oghren Sten already has a 20 point strength advantage on him so that even without beserk he still outdamages him with a better hitrate to boot, and he's just all around awesome. Big bad Qunari warrior of doom who happens to get along with cats and dogs and enjoys cookies.
The dog also gets hated on, I brought him along for the ride for the first time on my latest playthrough and let me tell you, for overwhelm alone the dog is worth it. On mages and archers it's an instagib ability, and to my surprise it even works on orange mobs. Jarvia and Branka both got their faces mauled off, allowing for a good chunk of completely free gang up damage on them.
Who else loves the characters/builds these forums seem to hate?

Nehraa Kadan!
The Sten is just packed full of awesome, I really don't understand the hate for him, he only got 1 spec, big deal, he don't need another spec. Just 1 will suit him fine (and thanks to the super cool "Winter Forge" mod, his sword can be upgraded)
Wardog, I keep meaning to bring out more with my characters, I do intend to have one playthrough where he is going to tank the Archdemon though!
I am going to show him the love Bioware refused to give him! (can't control him if only party member at the gates and he gets no real post-coronation time)
Mabari are for life not just Christmas

I just overwhelmed another orange mob,the hermit in the brecilian forest, for another easy fight. Overwhelm is a really, REALLY good ability.
And I wholeheartedly agree about the lack of another specialization, Sten doesn't need it. Most people go with champion to get warcry, but sweep is just as effective a crowd control measure for warrior a fair chunk of damage while knocking down most people it hits.

sten never left my party during my first playthrough and he becomes very powerful towards the end of the game. also on my first playthrough i healed the dog, but never encountered him after ostagar so i didnt have the pleasure. he is in my party now, and i want to pet him for being a good boy.

I don't find Isolde's voice quite as annoying as everyone else seems to...

Overwhelm is big. I took my dog on all the side quests (Blackstone Irregulars, Mages Collective, etc.). I left him off the main quests though because I wanted to hear the conversations between my other party members and see their reactions after major events.
I had no problem with Sten but I didn't use him much. Basically he, Ohgren and Wynne were my "B" team. Leiliana and Morrigan were my "starters" with Alistaire and Zevran platooning. I wasn't crazy about Alistair but I figured he would be the future king so I gave a little more burn then he probably deserved.
Oh, and Shale got a little play as well.

Cliche, but the Sten is "my man." He plays a great stooge to the comic Oghren, directly challenges the hero's leadership...constantly...and is completely under-rated on the battlefield. There is nothing more awesome than watching Sten flatten a mob of enemies, maybe not quite as efficient as Morrigan as a crowd controller, but certainly effective.
I get a bit snippy when I read players lamenting they couldnt romance Sten, I do get where they are coming from, but for me because you can't romance him the relationship you eventually develop with the Sten - should you take the time and interest - is deeper because of it. When "Sten" is the default answer to "who do you want to leave in charge of the gate defence" it is completely believeable; he is truly the one I would trust with my life and everyone else's.
Dog will get his day with me one day, right now I am doing an all-girl group for something different.
