Just thought I'd add this to the general lore. (That is to say: I do NOT have a problem anymore, I only found a workaround for a crash.)

ATI Radeon HD 6850 1 Gb, Catalyst 12.8
ASUS Xonar 2 (digital out -> DTS)
(Other hardware includes Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3, Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse, basic Logitech keyboard that's really too simple to cause problems with anything, and a network adapter built around a Realtek 8129C+ (I think). No added firewall software/hardware on my end, anti-virus is the latest free Avira, kept up to date.)
The game crashes after the third phase of the Sloth Demon fight in the Fade (Circle of Magi plot quest) - possibly transforming from a Rage Demon to a Shade, but I wouldn't swear on that. So, third transformation after the battle has begun. Bam, no log, no entry in the event viewer, no error message.
I tried to work around this by deactivating framebuffer effects, reducing graphical detail (Very High to Medium) and AA for good measure, and the problem went away. Yay!
... That's all I have to say, really. Ponder this and profit in times of trouble.
