In ancient China (I know during the Song Dynasty) they would use Martial Arts in battle while wearing partial plate and wielding battle shields. (usually rimmed with small spikes or blades) They were often in small numbers and used as shock troops.
That is when martial arts is effective in a big battle. When your covered in armor and swinging around a bladed shield with your kicks and strikes.

While I would like a hand-to-hand fighter, I'd MUCH rather have a brawler-type than a martial arts type. Could go well with Qunari main characters. (Plus, the strength-based hand-to-hand brawler fits the European-esque setting: legends have it that Charlemagne could punch so hard that he would knock his foes' heads off their shoulders)

...strength-based hand-to-hand brawler fits the European-esque setting...
Go look up Ringeck's treatise on wrestling. These were people who knew EXACTLY how to use leverage, joint locks and points of contact to defeat an opponent in unarmed combat.
In short, everything Eastern unarmed artists did the Germans were doing TOO.
The notion of Europeans as all strength no finesse is a load of garbage.

Of course, Greco-Roman wrestling (and later wrestling) uses leverage and all that, but if I want my character to throw a foe, I want her to pick them up and toss them, not use leverage. Look at the Highland Games for some good strength-based fun.
ETA: How about rogues getting martial artist stuff and warriors getting brawler stuff?

Ah, so it is "my way or the highway" when it comes to unarmed combat for you? Just because you prefer a dex-based martial arts-type of unarmed combat doesn't mean that is the only viable way to implement unarmed combat.

It's PRECISELY the reason why people still think Western martial arts were just big dumb guys beating each other with overweight, glorified metal clubs. You're damned right I'm going to defend against how its portrayed even in a game like this.

How do you conclude that large, strong, and tough combatants using their advantages (being large, strong, and tough) in combat is "dumb"?

Think of it like this: Big, strong, tough Germans were usually fighting....OTHER big, strong, tough Germans. You wouldn't HAVE that clear size and strength advantage. I've barely cracked the surface in my own study, but it has far more in common with Eastern martial arts than brute-force brawling. And this is the EXACT same form of unarmed combat taught to guys who went out on the battlefield in full Gothic harness.
It's not that it ignored strength, but that was a VERY small part of it.
It's a total disservice to dumb down Warrior hand-to-hand to mere brawling. Brawling is for barrooms, not the battlefield.

/shoots self in face for making this thread
if someone want to kill darkspawn by punching them in the face why stop them? you can go download the more realistic version that will take months more programming to get the new animations
IMO the basis of good roleplaying games is that you can build your avatar anyway you want from brute force, to magical explosions to dexterous assassinations moves
so make all the mods, why pick and choose between two legitimate play styles in A GAME MEANT TO HAVE FUN WITH

Dexterity-based martial arts-style fighting is not inherently a "smarter" form of fighting than Strength-based brawling-style fighting. YOU are doing to "disservice" by insulting a viable style of fighting because it isn't your cup of tea, so please stop basing your arguments on said insults.

how about specialization combo trees? IE shapeshifter + Arcane Warrior gives "aspect of ____" tree that gives specific buffs and messes with the character model?
