The quarians didnt want to create self aware AIs, maybe they even had killswitches in the programm, but the geth simply did not react.

So we know how the Geth rebeled against the Quarians.

Why didn't the Quarians outfit each Geth unit with a kill switch?

I mean, even in todays world kill switchs are quite commonly used for various Military purposes.

If the Quarians had actually stopped to think about it, they would have outfitted the Geth with Kill Switches. 

Would have saved the entire galaxy some real trouble

That's not a functional difference. Both require that the device to be impacted accept the commands being sent: in the case of the power switch, that the switch you pull at location A actually produces the expected action at location B. This applies to both digital and mechanical signals.

Have to say that after being in the geth consensus and seeing what triggered the Morning war, I had little sympathy for the leaders of the Quarian race.

Then for them to start another war when the reapers have arrived and are causing death and destruction across the galaxy, I was of the opinion that the Quarian leaders had lost their minds!

I wouldn't say that the entire species as a whole is stupid, because there are exceptions to every rule (Tali, Reeger, the quarians who tried to hide/help the geth during the morning war), but the actions of the leaders leave me questioning the intelligence of the ones in charge.

Only the quarian leaders are stupid, maybe indoctrinated ^^. But Dont blame all of them for the failures of 2 or 3 Admirals
