Earthquack -- to slow the monsters down
Fireball #1 -- To slow them down some more
Blizzard -- to make sure that they think they are not "hot stuff" anymore
Firestorm -- Like 'em well done
Tempest -- Just make sure they are dead
Fireball #2 -- Weaken them some more
If they lived through all of that -- they can meet my meat shields
Yes, it is over kill, but so much fun!

what about archer rogue (with the stamina potion mod, because archer skills suck up way too much stamina)
I know some people find them underwhelming, but I love rogue archers. So far, I've played 5 of them, including my just-finished playthrough that I intend to continue into Awakenings.
Mages are a close second!

Secondly comes the Rogue Archers but they feel so much weaker in every aspect.

2 - Mage for spell variety.
3 - Warriors for weapon specialties and sub-classes.

The sunder skills for dps, and the twohandedsweeps for CC. Use taunt or better the champion Warcry for threat.
I also went Templar to be able to deal with Casters. Makes for a very versatile party, as you can take just about anyone you wish along. I even made Alistair a dualwielder

I don't like arcane warriors. They're basically what's called "tank mages," which has been the symbol of powergaming ever since Ultima Online. The game just gets far too easy when you play something like that, even on nightmare difficulty. In any case, mages in plate armor makes me cringe.
Then use robes or light armor. Being able to wear a helm instead of cowls & hats makes this one a winner for me.

Leather armor and helmets would look equally bad on a mage, to me. I prefer using the "hide helmet" mod, which makes whatever you put in the head slot invisible.

DW warrior would be a close second. Extremely fun when you have a group set up that lets you get the fastest attack speed possible and you just whirlwind and swipe the crap out of everything on top of that.
