Useless if it isn't relevant to the story. They were exterminated. Their reappearance would be important. Griffons making an appearance in DA3 because " it's cool " sounds very bad actually.

I don't recall anything in either game that stated they were "exterminated." The general belief is that they became extinct, that their numbers dwindled. That's a whole different matter than extermination.

For all we know, someone has a small griffon farm/sanctuary in the mountains or on an island somewhere.

It is said that after the great battle against the darkspawn ( I don't remember which blight it was ) , they disappeared. If they talk about the battle, it means they were mostly destroyed to the point of never being seen for centuries and centuries.

extermination = had so many losses that after the war their number was insufficient to reproduce, for other generations later, and thus after the extinction of the race.

Dragons were thought to be extinct for a while. It would be lovely to see griffins in game.

It would be really fun if DA3 were all about griffins as a playable race on an island somewhere. And we could all play our own individual griffin. Our characters could be in assorted pastel shades and we could have 'sparkly marks' on our flanks!

Or not. :wizard:

Extermination implies an active attempt to get rid of something, to eliminate numbers. Such as exterminating pests (rodents, insects, and the like). To say that the griffons were exterminated would suggest that they were hunted out and killed...and thus far, we have not heard anything to support that.

Okay, so it's just the word exterminated that bothers you ...  Okay, fair enough ...  The point was just that they disappeared non-naturally, suffering the consequences of huge losses during the war against the darkspawn, who massacred them in large scale to the point their race could not survive that.

If there's actually a reason for them coming back, story wise, then yes I'd love to see them. If it's just for the reason that it'd be cool, then no. After all they did die out. It wouldn't really make sense if all of a sudden griffons just appeared out of nowhere.

Idk...they wouldn't even put horses in the game for reasons of limited resources required for animation. I read this in an interview, or the old forums, and edit: found a reference:
http://www.kotaku.co...-you-very-much/ . Anyway, it's doubtful they will add griffons unless they are important or necessary to the story as Shadowfang pointed out.

Anyone know where the Griffins are in the meantime? For example, Dragons reappeared when their population recovered from over-hunting. Why are Griffins missing from the landscape. (I know they are referred to in one of the DA titles)

I would prefer their return in a later installment instead of the next one. I think they should only (re)introduce them when things are really rolling fast to the end. That, hopefully, won't be the next Dragon Age.
