I was thinking of replaying DA2, today. this time as an archer...Then it struck me. The deep roads expedition... Varric has to be in the party. That means the party has 2 archers. Now I do want Bethany to become a Warden instead of a Circle Mage...That means I have to bring Anders along too. So 2 archers, and 2 mages...This is dreadful. Plain and simple. Or am I remembering this wrong? The 1 weapon style per character is pretty gamebreaking.

Well in that specific situation it is suboptimal, but just drop to casual you will be fine.

This. You'll have no problems in casual at all. It's ridiculously easy.

The only problem with those answers if, what if you wanted to play the game on Hard or higher and still have the things that you want to happen happen?

The encounter will be difficult but not impossible except maybe on Nightmare (that will be tough). The party will have to be kept spread out to avoid the Rock Wraith knocking out both healers. The healers will have to alternate healing the archers and themselves. The whole party will have to be micromanaged. A stock of elfroot potions and healing potions will be a must. It will also depend on what spells Anders and Bethany have. The rock wraiths are very weak to cold and spirit spells. So you mages should have staffs that deal cold or spirit damage. If you can equip the archers' weapons with runes that do cold or spirit damage.

Resistance to lightning will be necessary. Both the Ancient Rock Wraith and Profane have electrical attacks.
The party will have to chip away at the Rock Wraiths health and make sure the party takes out all of the profane that generate if the Ancient Rock Wraiths chain lightning attack.
Good luck.

It is an impossible set up, most enemies will attack in melee, darkspawns, dragon and dragonlings...respawning enemies.... this set up will fail.

Impossible only lasts until proven otherwise.

I beat the rock wraith with two archers, another rogue and a healer on hard. It took awhile but the ability to keep our distance worked in our favor- prepare before you go into the deep roads and micromanage. Isabella was useless, but it can be done. I was even on xbox, and it's redic trying to micromanage there. Of course the party isn't even, but what's the fun if there isn't a challenge?

You can change difficulty at any time, even mic combat.

As I recall the OP is right Varric is mandatory and you must bring Anders for your sibling to survive the Deep Roads and become a Grey Warden

And what if you don't want to feel like you're cheating?

...then don't? It can be done, even if it's not optimal, so enjoy the difficult fight?

I am sure it can be done, allthought it would be a very grinding experience. As mentioned by someone further up: The spawning of enemies will be a huge problem. they just drop right in your lap. Also there is a dragon encounter in the deep roads. Semi big one but it has loads of smaller ones. Not a fight i will be looking forward to, with zero melee characters.

I don't think 2 archers 2 mages is undoable.

You're not limited to one weapon style, anyway. You can always equip some daggers.

You can always use Makers Sigh and respec one of the rogues to melee just for the Deep Roads

I get the impression OP is doing this more for the story aspect, not the challenge aspect.

That defeats the challenege he is trying to present himself. Basically he is looking at  a ranged party. ( Varric is required and Hawke will be an archer). He wants to make Bethany a Grey Warden which requires bringing Anders along otherwise she dies.
The fight will be tough. It is doable, but requires a great deal of micromanaging to keep everyone alive.

Well if he wanted a challenge, he has one. If he wanted to do it for story, turn it down to casual. lol.

I assume he is doing it for both. Also Maker's Sigh is only available if you have the Black Emporium DLC installed.
