She's a machine. She's a tool. She's not alive.

Certainly not. Like any AI it may mimic it, but it certainly isn't alive.

Mimic would suggest that she is following preprogrammed protocols. However, if she is "mimicing" life on her own free will, then what's the difference?

Shepard is an organic Machine, He's a tool. He is not alive?

She has no free will. She is bound by the constraints of her programing. Her ability to adapt and learn is only there because it was programmed in by beings with actual free will.

Yes, which is another reason why I hate merge, as merge tries to tell us that EDI now only feels alive thanks to Shepard jumping into a beam and putting a little bit of herself in everyone despite the fact that she outright told Shepard it was thanks to Shepard she truly feels alive before the push to the beam.
