I'm seeing some people here claiming that EDI was never alive. Just to see what people's opinions are, I created a poll. Do you think EDI is alive? Why or why not? And to follow that up, do you consider her a tool or a person?

Do you consider EDI to be alive?
Do you consider EDI a tool or a person?

Am I alive?

Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?

THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTNING, VERY VERY FRIGHTENING ME.

On topic, I do consider her alive.
She has emotions, she has a conscience, and she has attachments.
Therefore, alive.

Here is a followup question. Do you consider her a tool or a person?

Your link to the poll isn't sending/pointing to the poll.

and, Yes, according to what life is catagorized as in the MEU, she is Alive and likes Joker as a human person and probable LI. She's shown many attributes of 'life' as we condition ourselves to believe as 'alive'. But an ameba is alive, so it's a matter of 'degree' and what you mean by 'alive'..

She's a machine. She's a tool. She's not alive.

Shepard is an organic Machine, He's a tool. He is not alive?

Certainly not. Like any AI it may mimic it, but it certainly isn't alive.

I'm a fan of EDI since the Collectors boarding the Normandy in ME2. Before that, I thought of her as an annoying tool, who dares to tell me I can't access some parts of my goddamn ship. But since then, she is my trustworthy and valuable ally. She proven to be a person and a friend multiple times.

I still pick Destroy, though.

that is too arbitrary, as organics are tools, if used by others for some purpose. Any Marine would vouch for this reality.

really tho, the poll should include a 'both' choice..(like the ending of ME3 should have at least 30 choices..)

Mimic would suggest that she is following preprogrammed protocols. However, if she is "mimicing" life on her own free will, then what's the difference?

its that 'degree' thing haunting the question..again. We'd have to look up "life" on google and see how the better half live..lol

She has no free will. She is bound by the constraints of her programing. Her ability to adapt and learn is only there because it was programmed in by beings with actual free will.

And are we nothing more than the sum of our expierences, our organic programming? She seemed to have free enough will to change her programming, same as we do to learn new things.

From what I gather, the being who programmed those constraints is herself. She explicitly stated that she has superceded her programming, and near the end of the game, she alters her own core programming like self-preservation instincts.

Depends on the individual's point of view, is Cortana alive?

I don't consider her "alive" in a biological sense, but I don't think she is any less sentient or intelligent than a human or any other alien. That question is entirely based on what your definition of alive is; there's more than one. That makes the first poll kinda pointless.

As for the second poll, yeah, I think calling her a person would make a lot more sense than calling her a tool. Would a hammer that can do calculus and discuss philosophy and have a desire to live still be just a tool?

She has a moral code, but...nothing else to lose?

Yes, which is another reason why I hate merge, as merge tries to tell us that EDI now only feels alive thanks to Shepard jumping into a beam and putting a little bit of herself in everyone despite the fact that she outright told Shepard it was thanks to Shepard she truly feels alive before the push to the beam.

Also this. Her speech is pretty nice, but that line.... I'll never pick Synthesis because of it.
