Alive? Not in the least. She is an automated tool.
Is your iPod alive?
Is your Porsche alive? (some would like to think so)
Is your tablet alive?

Certainly not. Like any AI it may mimic it, but it certainly isn't alive.

Mimic would suggest that she is following preprogrammed protocols. However, if she is "mimicing" life on her own free will, then what's the difference?

She has no free will. She is bound by the constraints of her programing. Her ability to adapt and learn is only there because it was programmed in by beings with actual free will.

From what I gather, the being who programmed those constraints is herself. She explicitly stated that she has superceded her programming, and near the end of the game, she alters her own core programming like self-preservation instincts.

Some would qualify/quantify that as 'mimmic', rather than learning? It's a degree of quality of life, similar to what would happen to a synthesized Husk. Many don't like that idea at all, eventhough, many didn't meantion 'life', only quality of life, so a Husk is alive, but Edi, since she's expendable, is up for grabs?

No.

Most Definitely Sane wrote...

On topic, I do consider her alive.
She has emotions, she has a conscience, and she has attachments.
Therefore, alive.

Except none of those have anything to do with being alive.

Earthworms are alive. They don't have emotions, a conscience, or attachments. What they do have is growth, reproduction, and a metabolic process.

Yes, which is another reason why I hate merge, as merge tries to tell us that EDI now only feels alive thanks to Shepard jumping into a beam and putting a little bit of herself in everyone despite the fact that she outright told Shepard it was thanks to Shepard she truly feels alive before the push to the beam.

Also this. Her speech is pretty nice, but that line.... I'll never pick Synthesis because of it.

Tricia did a fantastic job, just do bad she had to read crap that contradicts character dev and throws EDI's whole dam arc out the airlock and into the sun.

Alive? Eh. Not in the general biological sense, but yeah.
A person? Hell yeah.

I thought it was "more alive" since she got a dose of Sheps DNA conversion? More akin to 'being human', or humanistic?

If they were run by an artificial intelligence who has shown the ability to create hteir own moral standards and adapt their programming to reflect it, then yes, they are all alive.

Not sure, I though I hear/read that in the conversations as well, but before she left the ship proper, not after she assumed control of that homely robot bod upgrade.. ;]

Now you may be right, I only saw that epilogue once the day EC came out. But I remember it being something like, "Now I am alive, and I am not alone".

Well, her body's composition certainly doesn't fit fit the definition of biological life, but I suppose she could be considered a person. After all, is the human brain any more than an intricate meat computer?

It's that schism, between orga and syntha. Competing life forms. But humans and apparently, most organic life forms are alone with themselves. Maybe she felt less 'opposed' and more 'accepted' amongst her 'new' peer group?

towards the end of me3, i am pretty sure i messed it up . But then again she does say during the final goodbye that she is alive because of shepard. so idk. And she is alive. self aware, she doesn't really have emotions but she does emulate them,  So i don't know

i think she is alive. at least until i shoot the tube. Even then i be iffy, i mean the normandy seems to out run the shockwave but then her name is on the wall so meh. And as for synthesis i think that just destroys her development over the past 2 games . basically saying no matter how much she grew she could never experience life without it. and i think that is false

That would make sense, but she did have organic "friends" amongst the Normandy crew. I wouldn't say she was "alone" not by a long shot. I didn't see synthesis as neccecary for Organics and Synthetics to coexist, probably the root of my contention with that line.

These comparisons are inadequit when relating to Edi. She is definitely more than those examples, by far.

You are free to take my comment how you wish. My poiunt was, that I see a computer for what it is...a tool. The same as I see the items I listed. EDI is by far a better tool, but none the less...a tool. Spinning my comment will not default that fact.

The whole I'm not alone line makes me cringe. So what about Joker, Shepard, Adams, Sam, Liara, Garrus, Tali, Kaidan and other members of the Normandy?

What makes her fundamentally different from a person, or a human slave?

Yes, she and the Geth are alive and living. Even before they have their upgrades, they can think and make opinions based on their nature. EDI states she feels alive.

As are the Reapers. And as living, intelligent beings, what they do to the galaxy is atrocious and horrid. They must be annihilated for the sake of life everywhere.

EDI states this. She is repulsed by them. And they threaten that which she loves, and she is capable of love. Even if it meant her death, she would not let the Reapers live. If she were with Shepard at RGB, she'd wrench the gun from his hands and shoot the pipe herself.

I must be one radical sob, couldn't bring myself to destroy the one good thing coming out of the reaper tech in a universe coated with more likely candidates for destruction..just because circuits upset me. Humans made her come into being, to just ignore her petty wants isn't in my list of things to do in the end..I alway pick synthesis because of the chance it might give her and Legions geth. They deserve a better ending. But to each their own as it were..
