Here's a thought for improving the spell cool down time system:

You'd be able to cast a spell repeatedly as often as you like as long as you have the mana for it, however each time you re-cast a spell within it's cool down time it's mana cost increases.
Once the cool down time is over the spell then "resets" to it's original mana cost.  This would stop any tendency to just repeatedly hammer out your most powerful spell, while giving you more tactical flexibility to use a spell a couple of times quickly if you need & can afford to.

Of course there would have to be some tuning of the spell cost levels & mana regeneration rate, but I think it'd work.

Nothing's more frustrating than having plenty of mana yet being unable to cast the spell you need - we've all been there I'm sure.

Now I'm looking at this from a mage point of view, but I can't see why it wouldn't work for other classes as well.

To me, just seems a much more natural (if that's the right word) way of  doing things.

What d'ya reckon??

I've always thought the cooldown mechanism was a little weak, but I'm not sure a mana cost exponential increase is the best way to address the problem.

For spells in particular, I think a long CASTING time would be an interesting mechanic (the more powerful the spell, the longer the cast). This way it could introduce the concept of a caster being interrupted more and would make protecting them (and, hence, tactics) much more of a consideration.

Just my two pesos on the issue.

That doesn't sound to fun to me and the battle would be over before you got restricted. That would make mages more powerful if that is what you want. Then you'd have to nerf the stronger spells so it was more evened out so you'd end up in the same place just casting more spells.

I would happily get rid of cool down times,
Its only purpose seems to be to drag combat on longer than it needs to be.
