Synthetics can be replaced, there's nothing special about any of them. Why all the hubbub with Destroy ending?

Also, shouldn't the OP say that control is the means to survival?

I'm in control.

The way I see it is this..................the ending, has done nothing more than put everyone, at each others' throats.

Heh, you aren't replacing EDI or the Geth any time soon. They're the product of their experiences as much as we are.

No, they can't just be replaced. One day in the future, that kind of comment may be considered racism.

I already find it racist as hell...

I could clone the OP. This clone would be completely identical down to the genetic level. He would also be a totally different person.

In other terms, you can rebuild the body/machine, but you can't replace the soul.

They don't have souls.

Neither does anyone else.

He's different person because he's a different collection of matter, otherwise, one twin would be liable for the other's crimes.

Yeah, I think that the reason thy wanted to preserve the Geth or at the least, not choose to kill the Geth and Edi, comes from the belief that they could be alive. I know, all 3 of the ends undoes this saying, "no, they're not really alive", but that's what leaves a bad taste. One ending says you desrtoy machines arbitrarily for no reason, but it's okay, they weren't really alive to begin withone says you take control of an uncontrollable species for all time [which you were against the whole time, but you weren't supposed to be paying attention to that thread] and th third says they weren't really alive before, but now they really are alive.

If you ignore the ending, the hope was that they really were alive like Data from Star Trek, or were as alive as R2D2 from star Wars, a conceptual life that evolved in a different way that should be preserved. the ending jut says, "no, they were just toasters all along" which undercuts the rest of the story which is one of the main reasons most people shoot the crazy, malfunctioning program before choosing a non connected, unimportant ending. You don't believe them.

To me, it's like a Muslim saying there will be no peace possible between Muslims and Christians, so you can choose to destroy all religions, pick one and convert everyone who doesn't believe one way or the other or hybrid the religions. All three options are distasteful and based on an untrue premise that you can't challenge.

same thing can be said for humans, albeit we are organic machines, we're not so special

I think you missed the whole idea of what Artificial Intelligence means.

I don't see why people make a big deal over the Destroy ending wiping out synthetics. Any synthetic can be replaced, there's nothing unique about any of them.

one good thing about mass effect is that the games are able to make the player bond with the characters and because legion ended up showing so much devotion to his people and because you made it possible you feel how much he cares for them to so when you pick destroy its almost traumtic for some people.

say your favourite character in a long running tv show dies. etc etc.

Sacrifice has always been a major theme in the ME games. The Virmire situation. Arrival. And now sacrificing the Geth, so all organic species can live. I really don't understand why everyone are so upset over this.

On Virmire you have to sacrifice ONE person (a soldier), in Arrival, the batarian colony is doomed whatever you choose to do. Think a little before posting such lame analogies...

Why did the geth at that question? "Does this unit have a soul?" It heard a discussion about religion.

There were probably others that heard discussions and had other handlers. "Does this unit have a soul?"
"No. You don't. I don't, so how could you?"
"I heard Creator Zxxxxx talking about souls."
"Creator Zxxxxx believes in things we cannot see or hear. It might as well be a flying spaghetti monster."
"What is a flying spaghetti monster?"
"It is a joke, Unit 750. Remind me to explain it to you tonight."
"Very well. I will return to my work. Thank you, Creator Xxxxxxx."

If you destroy the Geth all their history is gone, their personality (yes they have personality too)

For example Legion had a fascination for Shep, due to the fact he (or it) followed Shep and even used his/her armor to repair him/its self

Now if you replace Legion (Geth VI) what makes Legion,Legion is now gone his personality everything

If Shepard ended up alive in the end, then I have no doubt in my mind that synthetics can be replaced.  Either way, I'd never cared for them, why should I now? Because I might offend some people that do? Ha!

By the way...

I rather liked the fact that destroy wiped out the geth. Legion proved it was a liar on Rannoch and when I was offered a way to eliminate the Reaper-fied geth along with the Reapers, I took it.
