I want to play this game so badly but I frequently get slowdown for about 3-4 seconds repeatedly while I am playing the game. I have tried using the Compatibility toolkit to force directdrawemulation as someone told me that could be a solution but that did nothing. I have run it as administrator in Win XP and 98 as well. I am using the version from GOG so its probably all patched up to the latest as well. I am running out of ideas :(

It really has been enjoyable but I don't think I can continue if these slowdowns persist. My laptop is not a gaming laptop but it ran KOTOR 1 jus tfine with no hiccups as a reference. (I am trying to play alot of the Bioware games)

Windows 7 64 Bit
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
Intel Core i3 CPU
Sony Vaio
4 GB RAM.

The generalized biffing mod (http://www.shsforums...alized-biffing/) may be your answer. If you installed to the default installation location (program files) then I would also suggest installing elsewhere, e.g. c:\\games\\bg, as the way vista and windows 7 deal with file locations for older games installed within program files can cause problems.

How does it feel to buy the GoG version when just a few weeks later the Enhanced Edition of the game is released over at Beamdog?

I didn't buy it though, I am playing it on my friend's computer but he doesn't really use it anymore. And I will look into generalized biffing, although I am not sure what that term actually means lol. You guys think enhanced version is going to fix things like what I am going through? Plus I play on pllaying BG2 right after this and they don't have any enhanced version for that yet.

Is installing it to C:/Baldur's Gate good enough? I didn't use "Games".

EDIT: Okay I put the Biffing in the directory of Baldur's gate and installed it, after that nothing else happened, was that all I was supposed to do? I also installed it for ALL files not just wav.

I think the plan is that enhanced edition should be quicker as they have cleaned up a lot of the old code (unless their new art work requires additional resources of course).

Your directory is fine.

If you want to check if your installation has been made then check the weidu.log file in your directory - that shows all the weidu mods that have been installed. If you can't see the log then put the weidu programme in your directory (you don't need to install it, just download the zip file and extract to your directory) and reinstall generalised biffing. You can find the latest weidu (231) at http://weidu.org/ - nearly all BG mods now use weidu.

You shouldn't notice any change with biffing installed (other than that you will get less slowdown when the game is calling on lots of resources - particularly when lots of monsters are on a map or in a battle).

Oh Grondo I never had any of the mods installed I am just using plain vanilla BG1 from GoG and it runs great except for the annoying hiccups every few seconds which makes it unplayable. I am afraid to say that I might not be able to play this great game which saddens me because I don't want to play BG2 without playing the first one. OKay I quickly tried BG 2 and it has the same slowdowns as well... *sigh* it looks like there is no fix for this in sight and I want to play this badly lol.

Also I quickly went back to play KoToR and once again it runs smoothly with no hiccups or quick freezes for 3-4 seconds like Baldur's Gate. This has to be an issue with Infinity Engine.

On a side note Grondo I have noticed browsing through the topics here over the months looking for a problem similar to mine just how helpful you have been to others. I commend you for that and appreciate your efforts to help me. One thing I did notice though is that alot of the people who had lag problems in game didn't seem to say that they ever got it fixed which makes me feel better in the sense that I am not alone. Still sucks that it works well for alot of people on windows 7 though.

Apologies. You did say you were using vanilla BG1 before - I'm just so used to thinking of the BG2 game engine these days.

If you've got stuttering right from the start (and the same problem with BG2) that suggests some sort of conflict with your system or an installation problem rather than resource problems within the game (so generalised biffing probably wouldn't help anyway).

One other thing you could try is starting windows 7 in safe mode and installing from there. The reason for doing that is that some programmes (such as browsers and virus checkers) can interfere with the installation process.

Interesting so it might be an installation problem as well. Huh I will have to look into that then :). It has to be a conflict with the Intel HD card or something because the sound will keep going while everything is frozen and then 4 seconds later everybody is in the appropriate spot as if they had just completed an action.

My work laptop specs are similar to yours but has no issue with bg... I have the amd (not intel) and 6 gig ram. I’d be inclined to look for other resource hogs at this point with antivirus and torrents being the first things to check.

Older antivirus programs like nortans are notorious system slowers and should be removed/ replaced with something more up to date like avg or avast (free)... also check that your antivirus program is not trying to scan/ sandbox the game while it is playing... all good AV programs allow you to make an exception for the games exe.

Turning off high swap file users like torrents will improve your overall system performance & disc defragment is always a good idea but don’t use the windows one unless you must... UltimateDefrag is faster if your friend is ok with you using that instead.

Knights does not use as much cpu as bg so I’d also take a peek at the Config.exe, a slightly slower game speed of 30 with some extra cache (1000) and 5000 paths should take the pressure off your cpu... note that all computers must have the same game speed if you want to play with somebody in multiplayer. From inside the game options, put a tick in “transparent shadows” and untick “environmental audio”.

Ah I am using Kaspersky Antivirus you think that would be hogging it up? It doesn't affect any other games and it usually is good about not lagging up the computer in general. I remember how bad Norton was for me though on another laptop.

I am starting to think the Intel crappy integrated card is the culprit lol. Thanks for the suggestions ussnorway you are one of the more helpful people around here. I will try those as soon as I can, hopefully this will solve BG2 as well. Let me see if I can get config.exe for you. Also I don't plan on playing with anybody in multiplayer so you don't need to worry about that.

I actually uninstalled it because I got disgusted it wasn't working. Thats nice to know about KotoR probably why i was able to run it. So right now my values are at default I am going to change the numbers to what you suggested.

I am still alive lol. I know this is a weird question but even though this is an old game, you don't think the slowdown issues is coming from an Intel card is it? Despite running KotoR flawlessly you would figure this game wouldn't have much difference.
