Because there isn't a whole lot of interesting things to buy at the end game, so she had money to spare.

With an object that looks as obviously evil as the Idol (it glows red!), it's really surprising why anyone would go anywhere near it.

She bought it so she could jump around like an anime hero. Before she bought it, she was the only one in Kirkwall that couldn`t do that.

There are the important facts that Meredith told us: She bought it from Bartrand, actually paid a good deal for it, she thought that the dwarf was weak.

So, why she bought it? A desire for power! Why didn't she regard the consequences? Vanity!

There are lyrium enhanced/imbued weapons.

ReggarBlane wrote: "The lyrium supply is largely controlled by the chantry but it is not illegal for others to possess it."

Didn't Hawke have an option to set one of the templars up in Act 2 with a shipment of lyrium and claimed he had done some "demony" acts/things? Can't remember the templars name but the drunk templar in the Hanged Man was who Hawke spoke with.

ReggarBlane wrote: " (regardless who purchased the idol and made the sword)."
also terdferguson123 wrote: "my guess is that she wasn't the person who it was originally sold to. She most likely confiscated it somehow."

When Meredith drew the sword and was pointing it at everyone, Varric said something like, "Andraste's dimpled butt cheeks" and Meredith said "you recognize it do you not? The dwarf wanted a lot (of gold maybe) for the idol" (paraphrased).

Lol, I forgot to answer the original question. Power, the age old desire for more power. She no doubt felt the idols's siren call and her own self-righteousness was in full bloom as it was and then with the Viscount dead and that seat of power openly vacant she was ripe for being "possessed (and overtaken completely) by the idol." She ruled the Viscount pretty much before he was gone, and Kirkwall along with it. She was also very open about her dislike for Orisino. So she molded (had it molded) the idol into an instrument that she was very familiar with and succumbed to it's call.

When Bartrand had the idol he said he had to "feed it and care for it." I wonder if at some point maybe the gossiping of the younger templars about Meredith "killing those who didn't do what she required them to do" were used to also "feed" the idol???

My theory: the idol sought out Meredith far more than she sought out it.

It sang to her. At first, slowly, quietly, in dreams and hopes and wishes. Then louder, likes whispers from another room; enticing and intriguing... but beyond her grasp. She had to follow it. Follow the whispers. Follow the song. Follow it to the ugly little dwarf. And when she finally found the idol (and it found her) it was love at first sight.

Pretty much what I think.

It wouldn't the first time that happened in Dragon Age. That's basically how Branka was lured to the Anvil of the Void.

Intriguing idea. The Anvil does/did have lyrium in it, but I think I'd need more info to agree that this was the cause. Branka's drive appeared to be pure obsession, not magical, or you wouldn't be able to snap her out of it at all without the (temporary) help of someone like Anders.

Theoretically, anyway. It's always possible the Anvil is 'young' primordial lyrium or some such that'd make a convenient excuse. I think I just prefer some characters' flaws being all their own and not able to be blamed on a tired 'it makes you crazy and evil' plot device.

It's more than an idea. If Branka is sided with and convinced to destroy the Anvil, she speaks of hundreds of voices calling out to her. The Anvil was infused with the lives of everyone turned into golems. It wanted to be used and it led her to Caridin's hiding place.

Yeah, I'm not convinced. The account of a woman who never had even Meredith or Bartrand's level of sanity (in the PC's experience) and spent the last however months in the Deep Roads sacrificing her people to darkspawn isn't that compelling. I'm not saying you're wrong, mind. You're probably correct. I simply need something more to go on.

Infused lyrium and demons can't be blamed every time someone starts hearing voices, but it's a distressing trend with games (though mucho kudos to whoever designed the Magistrate's Order quest, as it goes against said trend).
