Because I'm busy cursing, on an open mic.

Why do I wanna talk to a bunch of random people I don't know and will never see again after this game is over?

I play 3 multiplayer games. ME3 is the one where I don't use mic. Why?
1. Talking to 3 strangers I don't care about in foreign language at home costs too much from my voice budget :D .
2. Swarm of enemies from all direction and all dies so fast. What to talk about? Give orders to people? :>

Because the ****ty standard x-box headset I have is ****ty. Oh, and no push to talk. I hate having an open mic and wondering if I just blew out somebody's ear drums with my coughing.

Having said that, it's usually plugged in just turned off so it's ready if I get a chatty group.

I use my mic only in emergency, like someone going to ress me and i know there are 2 phantoms camping my body
But it's not very often, and I don't even know if anyone can hear me or how they can hear me, not sure if my mic is working or squeeking .
Communication is good in some cases, but I prefere "silent" squad over the ones who has to sing or I don't like to listening to "home communication" etc.

Well, sometimes I cuss.  Its not tourettes syndrome or anything though.  I was a sailor in the Navy ......  and we speak our minds.  Rudely.

So, I try to keep quiet for the most part.

Alot of times I don't use my mic because of music playing on their end, or talking to people around them apparently completely unaware that other people can hear them.

So a good deal of time, on XBL, I'll start a party without my mic on so it cancels out the game chat.

If they talk to you they might actually feel compelled to use medigel or rockets on objective waves and stuff. But not talking makes them feel like they can anonymously bleed out.

Because I am somewhat shy to speak a non-native language.
Even worse is when I talk to people in English and they answer or begin telling stories which I don't understand because the signal is garbled, my revenant too loud or my ears suck because of all the loud music I heard in my life.

It's really awkward having people talking to you like

"Take the brief-case!"
and all you can answer is:
"What's that about deep-space?"

I hate people, mostly, and sometimes, I want to listen to music and I don't want to annoy people. Usually up for some conversation, though it's rarely about the battle. I'll call out certain enemies and sometimes give little tips to newer players, but for the most part, I end up talking about whateverthe**** with the others in the match.

How necessary is that, really?

In general I use mic for "two phantoms from behind" and "thanks" stuff, I don't really feel like chatting about random stuff with strangers

I always run into people who appear to have microphones, but don't talk, even when asked about it. It's actually kind of rare to play even a Gold game with just one person who communicates. Very annoying. You always gotta watch your own ass because nobody can warn you about the random Phantom around the corner jest next to you. Only way you can tell they're 'warning' you is if they nearly shoot the **** out of you and start firing Powers, then you gotta turn around and face the enemy.

I normally only have my mic plugged in when talking with friends in a party, its rare to find random's who are actually willing to talk in game.

IF, other people are talking however then I will plug my mic in and talk, but if noone talks then I don't bother.

One time a ninja flipped through my window and tossed down a challenge. It was a grueling ordeal, a real struggle of life or death, and in the end I managed to kill him by strangling him with the cord of my controller.

I took a vow of silence that day.

I'm a fathead and I have to shout so that the mic could register my voice. Grrrr.

i talk a lot when not focused on the fight. if they reply the game gets fun. if not... i'll just feed on their frustration.
especially when i start giving tips and suggestions. they get mad pretty fast when you point out their errors xD

I talk when asked, but I feel very uncomfortable because of my prononciation and sometimes I don't understand very well if sound isn't clear (or how to say that when you are not sure if it was "bananas" or  sothing else like "for ranoch" )

The main reason I don't talk most of the time is that there are people in earshot. It's a little embarrassing to start yelling game-related things randomly when no one knows what I'm talking about...

I don't talk 'cos I don't have a mic. But I find that most of those that do are annoying kids talking cobblers, French, Germans, or my favorite, people who get killed then spend the rest of the wave trying to tell me how to do my job. Excuse me, you died, so in the words of Mr Gruber:

"Thank you Mr Cowboy, I'll take it under advisement."
Edit, not that I mind listening to French and German. Its a lot less annoying than cobblers in English, and it can be entertaining hearing people curse Phantoms in another language.

I play on Xbox, and my mic doesn't reach all the way over to my couch. So, that's why I don't. If a wireless mic came with it I'd be all about it.
