I have a mic, but I'm not really the talking type. I only start talking if somebody else is chatting.

Why do I wanna talk to a bunch of random people I don't know and will never see again after this game is over?

You must be a blast at parties.

I just wish I could get my mic to work. works in every other game in existence, teamspeak, ventrilo, mumble and anything else except ME3!!!!

Same here. It's so annoying. After I get off work, I plan to finally investigate the Curious Case of the Mic in ME3.

It always makes me feel incredibly awkward when I'm in a group and say something on the mic, then no one answers. Still, I talk anyway. Some things are important to say. You know, like, "There's a phantom behind you."

Sadly a lot of the time when I speak I am instantly mocked by american players for been briddish aka British. Its really quite annoying so I only really speak when I play with people on my friends list or if the person first response isn't 'oh hey its a briddish dude'

I love British accents. They're sexy. However, this American woman wouldn't say anything about your accent, because I'm sure I have a weird accent to you too. There are so many people from all over the world that play this game. It would be silly to call someone out for coming from a specific location.

So they bought a mic?

Well, no they wouldn't...
You do get a mic with a new xbox and most laptops have one built in though

I just want to say that this isnt true. I just bought a brand new xbox360 (the newstyle black ones with the touch buttons with like 300gb hdd?) and it did not come with anything but a controller. Hell it is the THIRD new xbox I have purchased (I got tired of paying microsoft to keep fixing their pieces of junk they make) and not a SINGLE one has EVER come with a mic. The only mic I ever had for my xbox was the mic that came with my original xbox that has since broke anyway. (Not that I would ever pay for gold anyway cause after being on my 6th xbox, including refurbs, I refuse to give microsoft even more of my money.)

EDIT: Also hardly anyone has mics for ps3 which is sad since you can use any usb headset perfectly on the ps3 and despite the xbox having usb ports it doesnt work on xbox (another reason xbox fails imo).

A lot of times, I'll be playing with a fan on in my living room. It echoes over my headset the entire game if I have my mic on and am constantly talking, and I know how much that annoys other people ... So I don't do it unless absolutely necessary.

I like people who don't talk unless they have something useful to say like a warning about bad guys sneaking up behind us. Though the whole 'there's a phantom on my side' is really useful when you don't know who is doing the talking.

I mostly have bad experiences with mic users. Screaming babies in the background, barking dogs, crackling music...

I also feel under pressure when people start telling others what they should and shouldn't be doing. I had one British guy who was claiming a whole area of FB White to himself and telling everyone else to shove off so that he could get all the glory by spamming lift grenades.

I cough a lot, and my mic picks up ambient noise. Because of this, I leave it muted unless someone else is talking as well, or I have invaluable intelligence to relay to the team. I may also let my voice be heard in the lobby if I need to let someone know SMG ULM is still bugged, or they have gear equipped that they cannot benefit from.

I've not encountered that yet - just the opposite, in fact. Added six new people to my friends list this week, all Americans who liked talking to friendly Brits. That said, in a lot of matches I've been in a private party with friends so I''ve not heard or provoked bigots...

For me it's a matter of concentration. I tend to play better when I'm not trying to talk. I also use sound to locate enemies and this is harder when I have my headset on. Typing, however, doesn't distract me as much so a text-chat system might help; probably because that's what I grew up with.

I don't use my mic for a whole host of reasons, but the best reason is that I tend to get by just fine without any voice communication. Similarly, I haven't often felt voice communication would impact the game's outcome much.

If I see others with mics plugged in and talking sensibly in game, I do the same. If they're plugged in but in a party chat, no point in me talking. I don't use the mic by default when solo due to the number of teens and younger encountered on xbox. Most of them are annoying both due to the content of their speech (Maaa!!! MAAAAA!!!! more hot pockets!!) as well as the alarming frequency of using the kinect mic for that age group instead of the controller ones (which pick up the in game sound effects from the TV speaker and sends them back to me).

If I'm playing with a friend or two and we've got room for a random player, we switch to game chat and ask them to do the same.

Because

1. Not everyone has a mic.

2. Not everyone wants to talk to strangers.

3. Not everyone is always in the mood for using their mic.
