Stranger danger??? TBH, I am guilty of this sometimes. I just wanna sit in my own world and enjoy myself. Don't get me wrong, the best feeling for me after a match is having that communication and everything turns out great. I just know every match isnt like that though.

Ever get in a lobby where everyone has mics but no one wants to talk first, so they are all making throat clearing noises at each other to see if someone else will break the silence.

Best minigame.

that's funny.   I'm playing tonight PST Time if anyone wantes to do some  runs - Gold any map.  I usually run the maps due to my connection 50meg down 35 meg up. if you are in the asia, europe area...  please do not bother,... there is this thing called 'the cloud', and it is LARGE. B)   ....if you know english, please join away, I dont mind a little rough lag for some good strategy talk  ;)

I tend to keep my mic off because if the house is noisy then nobody on Xbox Live wants to hear my family's music, and if it's quiet then nobody in the house wants to hear me hollering at Phantoms. Alternatively, I might already be in a party, or speaking to someone on Skype.

It's good, I love a microphone. I tend to pop it in when everyone's gone to bed and it's great. When I'm on it, I'm quite chatty, and if everyone else is too then I have a lot of fun. But yelling at some voices in a box that only you can hear isn't always entirely practical.

about the only time i can think where someone used their mic to say something useful was when they yelled at someone else who had run off on Extraction wave and was too busy shooting stuff to notice the countdown was about to expire. It got them to run to the extraction point just in time.

I was in a Silver match yesterday where the host scolded us during objectives - but she did it in a lighthearted way, without sounding whiny or bossy. ("Only two people on the drone? Come on, guys...")

I loved it, it gave the game more personality. Usually I hear nothing other than the occasional "Twenty seconds..." during Wave 11.

As to why *I* don't use a mic - I don't want my wife to laugh at me...

I always have my headset on and I do enjoy listening to legitimate random conversations between people, even in Russian. But if it's obvious that the randoms are vocalising just to get attention, I mute them. I like listening, but I don't join any random conversations with strangers, only if they seem nice and genuinely wanting better teamwork in the game.

yeah the problem (on xbox at least) is you get these overly hostile 'bro' types that insult anyone who doesn't fit into their extremely narrow set of standards.
I usually just leave lobbies with those people in them.
Wish I could stumble across some of these "nice and genuinely wanting better teamwork" people

I'm one of those people. Feel free to add me. You may have to put up with my comedy commentary though. Running into a Banshee/Beast is usually accompanied by a 'woah! Hello gorgeous/handsome!'

1. I'm occasionally an antisocial curmudgeon.
2. The female thing: recent example, me to a couple of score****s: are you going to help with the hack? Response in an insinuating "how you doin" tone: "say pretty please."
3. Leftover stress from work makes chatter distracting.

But I will talk with folks on my friends list.

I was nervous to talk in the beginning because I thought I would get harassed for being female. Luckily, that doesn't happen so much in this game.

I like talking to other people who like to strategize. It's more engaging to me. No rambling though. And I will never be the one to speak first.

I don't talk because I have a very weird inflection to my voice that's hard to understand and I usually spend most of the match RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGING.

When I play with friends, I talk.

When I play in PUG's, my mic is on mute 95% of the time. I will sometimes talk if other players in the lobby are talking and specifically talk to me.

Other times, I just don't feel like talking and keep my mic on mute. I'm not very talkative.

It always makes me feel incredibly awkward when I'm in a group and say something on the mic, then no one answers. Still, I talk anyway. Some things are important to say. You know, like, "There's a phantom behind you."

I know what you mean. The other day in a quiet pug I stated how I wished I could exchange my krogan battle rage sounds with angry kitten sounds.

...silence.   ;)

I play music and sing along while I play, so unless you want me to sing to you consider your request denied.

Pretty surprised to see so many "don't want to be harassed for being female" posts here. Well, saddened more than surprised maybe. Is that really a thing, as in it's happened to most of you, or would you rather just avoid the potential hassle? I haven't really been using xbox live much as apart from a few sports games, I mostly play single player games on it. My main "social" gaming has been MMOs, and at least in my current game, Eve Online, the women I know playing don't really get that stuff. Then again, the average player age there is something like 28.

(If you say it happens, I take your word for it, don't mistake this post for doubting your experiences. Play a popular enough game and you're bound to get a bunch of basement dwellers crawling out of the woodwork, I guess)

I talk about random stuff or random objective things unless I am on the phone I mute the game. I always use push to talk because hearing someone else breathing in the mic is horrible!

Earlier tonight, I dropped into a R/R/S lobby as a Kroguard. Within 5 seconds I hear the host start cussing me out, calling me a f'n moron, as he placed a kick sign on me.

So that's one reason why I keep myself muted by default.

why don't people use their mics? i get more communication and teamwork on b/s than on g/p and that's rather sad. it's boring to spend an entire game or multiple games with a group of people who won't communicate or stratagize.

trust me you don't want me using my mic, unless you really like the sound of shrieking metel in your ears. But I agree with you, it really anoying when all I play is Q-infiltrator and theres 3 vanguards on the field that rush off into a group of enimes and get them selves killed then get mad at me for be being right there with them. I going to get a new mic soon so I can use it without making peoples ears bleed.
