Hi folks!  I just finished my 1st playthrough of DA and was hoping to get some RPG recommendations from you.  I would rather try another game than start another play of DA right now.  Until I bought DA, my PS3 has been mostly for the kids, but now I am looking for more and DA has set the bar high.

I would like a game more on the RP side than just action (as close to DA as possible).  I've been looking at The Elder Scrolls:Oblivion.  To me God of War looks completely action-oriented and all I read about Demons Souls is that it is very difficult.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Fallout 3 is definitely stronger on the roleplaying part than Oblivion, which is not much of an accomplishment, though.

If you are willing to look beyond the RPG genre, have a look at The Book of Unwritten Tales

It's a hillarious point&click adventure in the style and spirit of Monkey Island, making fun of typical RPG tropes.

I loved Oblivion, but its really a hack and slash RPG and if you're going to get it for the PS3 i'd advise you to skip it, Oblivion needs countless mods to make it require anything beyond just hacking and slashing.

If you haven't played the older Bioware games, try Kotor, Neverwinter Nights as well as Mass Effect, the NWN sequel made by Obsidian Neverwinter Nights 2 is fairly well done barring the bugs, and its expansion Mask of the Betrayer is great value and probably one of the better expansions for RPGs in general.

Oblivion isn't quite as bad as it's said to be, i know many people happily playing with the unmoddable console versions (whereas my PC version has nearly 200 mods :D). Fallout 3 is much more refined with less stupid design decisions. Out of the box it is a better game than Oblivion, unless you hate the post-apocalyptic setting.

A person above suggested The Witcher, which is darn nice RPG too, but AFAIK it's for PC only.

As above: Fallout 3, Oblivion and Neverwinter 2.

The Witcher is similar to DA:O in scope and scale, though sometimes there's so much going on it's easy to forget what you are doing or do things out of order and confuse yourself.

Beyond that, if you don't mind Diablo-style clickfests the demo of Torchlight was very promising.

Edit: Bah. Console only?  F3 and Oblivion then.  Darksiders looks good, is it out yet?

Try the on-site demo of Machinarium.net, best PC game I'd played this year till Dragon Age came along, and one of the best point-&-click adventures Ever. <3

and wow, The Book of Unwritten Tales looks great too! Other than the rare indie sleeper hits like these, the mainstream names in PC RPGs are pretty much all known and have been recommended already. Try the new King's Bounty if you're into turn-based strategy with some RPG elements, pretty addictive.

oh aww console only is it? I wonder if you can view Flash-based websites on there, cause then you'd be able to try Machinarium anyway.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Since I am looking for a PS3, it looks like Fallout 3 or Oblivion for me. I think I'll go with Oblivion since I'm looking more for a fantasy-based game.

If you arent allergic: Try the Final Fantasy series!

With your PS3 you will be able -i think- to play all parts from all 3 Playstations

(VII-XIII)

The Roleplaying part is not like DA:O and the combat system is in rounds(till FF XI),

but storys are epic and the Screenplay is always WOW!

As a PS3 owner ... unfortunately you will notice a huge lack in the RPG area for it. But here are a few PS3 console rpg's

Fallout 3 (futuristic post-apocalyptic)

Oblivion (Fantasy action/hack-n-slash RPG)

Final Fantasy VII (older PS console game which you can download from PSN for $10 IIRC)

Demon Souls (never tried it but hear some good feedback on it)

Sacred 2 (more of a strategy fantasy RP)

Thats about all I have either dealt with or heard feedback on when I sell them.

Future Releases for PS3

White Knight Chronicles (Scheduled 2/2/2010)

Final Fantasy XIII (Scheduled 3/9/2010)

Two Worlds 2 (Scheduled 4/1/2010)

Final Fantasy XIV (Scheduled ??/??/2010, Online MMO for PS3/PC)

Indeed. Taken as a whole, NWN2, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir constitute a pretty amazing RPG adventure.

Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are closer to shooters, but they're both amazing games in the grand scheme of things.

Oblivion is nice, but it's better as an open-ended faceless adventure rather than a epic story.

Dungeon Siege 2 is a total hack and slash but it's got an alright story and some nice spells.

Well, people have already said it, but if you're considering Bethesda's games, be aware that storytelling isn't exactly their strong point. Oblivion and Fallout 3 are more open world make-your-own-adventure games, unlike BioWare's, where you follow the main storyline form the beginning to the end.

As for "less stupid design desicions" that i said regarding Fallout 3, that applies only if you play it without Broken Steel DLC, as that broke the not too great to begin with balance in that game.

Risen. It's actually quite old school in a lot of ways and it isn't exactly on the easy side like 90% of games today.

Divinity 2 Ego Draconis .

Better than Dragon Age Origins IMO.

Open ended beautiful looking fully voiced, story changing, full crating, sandbox single player RPG that IMO should beat Dragon Age Origins for RPG of the year.

Hitch this game up to extreme settings and it is beautiful,it really demonstrates how BioWare system is dated, players want whole open worlds to explore. Dragon Age is a good game but half the hype is because it's made by Bioware.

If Divinity 2 was made in Canada or the US it would be game of the year.

It's out in the US on jan 2nd 2010 i think,it's been out in Europe for a while. The PC version is where it's at,from what i am reading it did not port over very well to consoles.
