My experience so far has been with Garrus romance. I've found that Tali is the best to take along as a squad mate on one of the Leviathan missions if you want the best dialogue from Garrus. I initally took Kaiden but he seemed to take priority.
I wondered about other combinations that are the best to take.
I'm planning to take Liara with my Shepard who has romanced her. I was wondering who would be the best to take along with her.

Indeed, Javik and Ashley seemed to let Tali do most of the talking when I took them along, Javik coming along in every Leviathan mission with Shep and his Tali LI in one, and Ashley in every mission in another Tali LI file.

So if your romancing Tali bring along Javik or Ashley.
If Kaidan is the Li Garrus is ok to bring along but not if it's the other way around.
It's mostly the third mission I'm concerned about, I'll give Edi a try with Liara

It was weird seeing Javik run out to rescue Shepard while the LI Tali stood around trying to use her shotgun like an assault rifle on all the cannibals and brutes, that's all I can say.

I didn't have the best luck with Ash and Liara as my LI. So do not bring Ash along.

I brought Garrus(who I never take) and got the best outcome with Ashley as a LI

I took Javik and Ashley got all the important lines to the point that I actually wondered (and tweeted gamble to no response) if they wrote the logic to give the LI the majority of the banter.
Keep in mind I was very drunk, but I was happy with the content at the end.

And I had Garrus and Ash in the third mission; Ash grabbed for Shepard. Besides that, I think she had two lines that can be counted as "romantic": the one when she's concerned about the dive before Shepard goes down and the one when she yells at him "don't do that again".

Liara was my Shep's LI and I took her and EDI for the mission on the Asteroid base. Liara had quite a bit to say there.
And of course she also has romance specific dialogue during the last mission. I took Vega and Liara for that one, and Liara was the one to run out and rescue Shepard.
On the second desert planet mission I took Garrus and Tali, so I'm not sure who to recommend to bring with Liara on that one, if you are planning to use her for all three missions.

From all of my attempts, EDI will always be the one who provides cover fire with the assault rifle while your other squadmate goes to get you. I guess if you want your LI or favorite character to rescue Shepard, EDI's the best bet for second squadmate.
