I have wondered this since my Wild Mage casts this spell every now and then, sometimes around neutral bystanders. Is that safe? You never leave the inventory screen, and the spell can even be used while the game is paused.

I played around with wild mages a while ago and concluded that there was no chance of a wild surge with identify. Rather annoyingly there is a chance with spells cast via minor sequencer, even though that's done via special abilities.
