After coming through the portal to Shale's nightmare and awakening Shale Can't get back out. Trying to get back to the portal character gets stuck up against what looks like part of a fallen stature. Downloaded patch 1.02a but no difference.

I got past it by going back to before entering the tower and using another character other than Shale (my mage) so Shale's nightmare was never entered.
It is a bug though, Shale's nightmare is broken.

Use WASD movement (thanks to shadeaux at gamespot)

WASD is simpler than my solution.
I turned into the Burning Man, faced away from the gap, and blasted mysefl through with a fireball.
Hey, don't knock it, it worked!

It is entirely possible that your hardware is a part of your problem, as it obviously has been for you in Mass Effect 2.
(Because we have so many more readers than posters, I have returned to this comment of mine to add an explanation. When a game player has very low graphical expectations, and is willing to accept some bad-looking, stop motion slow animations, it is possible for Dragon Age to be enjoyed while performing well below its developers' intended performance. The other relatively current Bioware game cannot be played that same way.)
