That another thing, why does Cassandra/inquisition/Chantry need me anyway. What can I do that no one else can?

In that case lets just stay in Kirkwall for the rest of our lives working at the docks moving cargo.

True, but why would I fall in love with someone whose just using me?

"Hello! I am a [Mage or Templar] and it is a splendid day to come visiting New Far Distant Pooptown. You there, what is your name?"

"Hello, I am Pro von Tagonist, and I am a Certified Public Accountant at our Village Waterpark."

"Oh, splendid! Say, did you know my friends and I are fighting a war with the [opposite group]?"

"No, I did not know that. I am a painfully boring human being with no interest in the world beyond our kick-ass bakery."

"Splendid! I guess it follows logically that I will ask you an important question that will shape your life."

"I would like that. No one talks to me. I spend all of my life writing snarky things on the Chanter's Board and hoping to make someone sad."

"Splendid! No one will miss you if you died, anyways. That answers my question! Now, give me a bag of muffins and my friends and I will depart for Old Poopview using the Waterfall Road. Did I misenunciate? Let me repeat. Ol-d Poop-view, via the Water-Fall Ro-ad."

"You did not misenunciate, because that is not a word and so it is not a thing that you can do."

"Thank you for the Legendary Muffins Of A Unique Recipe, and also go to hell! LOL!" *rides away*

The next morning...

"Hello! I am a member of the [Other Group]! Have you seen a man who says Splendid a lot? I already know the answer, and I will murder you if you lie to me."

"... Yes."

"I will murder you a lot less now, but I still might murder you some unless you tell me where they are."

"They went to Old Poopview via the Waterfall Road."

"They have no provisions, how do they have the energy to travel?"

"I gave them muffins."

"Murder everyone!" *almost everyone is murdered*

"That was a good job of murdering I just did. Ok, survivors, you can now bury your men in the swimming pond and wash your violated women below the waterslides. I ride for Old Poopview via the Waterfall Road."

*We all hate you very much now, from our insides out."

*in the middle of the night, a pillar of fire erupts on the Waterfall Road*

"Hello, Splendid village! We have returned with the dawn after springing our successful trap! Thanks for playing your unwitting part in the ruse! We only regret that [The Other Group]'s leader escaped with a brochure to your waterpark and the half empty bag of Unique Muffins that you and only you produce fresh each morning. Also, he is the Empresses' favorite piccolo performer but I am sure you can explain your helping a known fugitive to the local authorities more believeably than he can. Also, I'm the fugitive, LOL!"

"I hate you now too."

"I guess you and I could follow the haunting melody of his piccolo and perhaps catch up to him in the forest. I owe you that much revenge. We can bring two others at most because of memory concerns on Consoles.

"Consoles?"

"Consoles is my horse and he paranoid around people. He is afraid they will push their genitals against his spine. So I guess he is not really paranoid because that is how you ride a horse."

"What if I do not want to go? It is important to have a choice and I require the choice to stay in this village and be a nobody doing nothing."

"You can stay in this village with your dead friends and your battered women and die when the sheriff comes, or you can come with me and there will be all the spreadsheets and conversations you could ask for, also we can perhaps prevent the sheriff from ever knowing you helped me."

"I am ****ed, am I not?"

"Splendid! It's settled."

That was hilarious. Marvelous work, good sir.

That covers how I would be made to become a pirate at least.

As for fighting a war? Well I didn't get much choice in becoming a warden and got no backup at all for that. So I suppose I could be forced to be in charge of my own organization that I can run however I please with people doing my bidding.

Also no death sentence inherent with the job. So a step up from Wardening in that respect at least.Posted Image

So, they are serious about this whole mage/templar war? It sounds like DA2 part deux.

Oh not this again, this is like saying ''I don't want to play as a Grey Warden in Dragon Age: Origins, so what reason will I be given to be forced to play as one?'' Or: ''I don't want to play as an Assassin in Assassins Creed, what reason will I be given to force me to play as one?''

If the game is about an Inquisitor trying to stop the Mage/Templar war, I don't think you'll have much choice in the matter.

I know I won't have a choice in the matter.
I'm just hoping for a really good reason to care about something I have done so many times before.
I mean really, having to stop a war between two groups has become such a cliche in RPGs.

Fair enough

Thats definitely not love.
And definitely not worth fighting a war for.

The current consensus is that most, if not all of Dragon Age 3 will be about stopping the Mage/Templar war.
I personally have no interest in the Mage/Templar war, to me its just another conflict about whose in control.
So my question is, Story wise, what excuse will I be giving as to why I can't stay out of the war?

It's a safe bet that the answer is "you must."

For the same reason you can't just bail on Alistair and get the hell out of Ferelden in DAO.   You are obligated to believe that you must stop the Blight, and that Ferelden is worth saving.  "Why can't I just go warn the other nations and get more Wardens?"  Because plot.

For the same reason you can't get out of Kirkwall when it seems like the place is going to hell in DA2.  You are obligated to follow, more or less, the story of the Champion of Kirkwall because in the game's narrative it actually already took place.  Because plot.

If you or your character doesn't buy in to the narrative, your options are don't buy the game, or reroll with someone who gives a crap.

Edit:  That said, if your question was purely practical, than given that this is a roleplaying game the answer is to come up with a character who for some reason or another does care.  Then roleplay them.  This is what, ostensibly, roleplaying games are actually for.  Though they do well enough for self-insertery, I suppose.

Even the alleged cleverness of most any but-thou-must in a video game plot is open to subjective interpretation.

Well, except the one in DA2 where you had to help Sister Petrice smuggle out the Qunari mage.

In general though I suppose its best to enter games, at least when it comes to the premise of the narrative, with an open mind. You may like it or not, but going in expecting not to like it typically ends in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm not expecting to hate the narrative, as even a linear story can be enjoyable.
I just want then to give a reason as to why I can't do something, even if its something cliche like "I have cursed you and every time you don't do as I say the curse will cause you extreme pain"

Note: Your right about the quest Shepherding Wolves being unnecessary.

I noticed that alot of suggestions require me to have loved ones, be it family, friends, etc
I thought one of the big complaints of Dragon age 2 was the forced family?
Either way, if I'm forced to have loved ones, can I ask that are at least be loveable. failing that, can they be not be whiny.

Hmmm.... (bolded part)  Odd.  Biggest complaint about DA2 I heard was the forced HUMAN part.  Never actually heard this one.

Definitely odd, when you look at Origins.

In DA:O, all origins but 2 actually had family present, and of those two, one both referenced family (deceased), and had a clan.

Human Noble:  The Couslands (Bryce, Eleanor, Fergus, Player, Oriana, Orlen)
Dwarf Noble: the Aeducans (King, Trian, Player, Behlen)
Dwarf Commoner:  Sister Rica Brosca (later wife of Behlen)
City Elf: The Tabris family (Cyrion, player) and Shianni (cousin).  Mother is seen in Leliana's song
Dalish Elf:  Parents deceased (father murdered, mother suicide), but Clan still cares deeply.

Only the Mage origin had no family shown.  Dragon Age has pretty much ALWAYS been about family.  So maybe I'm not getting this one.

Its true that in Dragon Age Origins that most of the origins had families.
The thing is, you really didn't have to deal with your family outside of the origin starter.
The Dwarf Origin are the exception, but even there you could ignore your brother and sister.

While in Dragon Age 2, your family plays a role in the story from beginning to end, and your not allowed to ignore them.

When people complain about having a family, their real complaint about how we're being forced to play a set character.

Uh... the same way they made you pick a ruler in DAO, and then go fight the darkspawn?

My least favorite Warden treaty zone is the Brecilian Forest. I'm not really interested in the whole Dalish elf thing. I save that for last every time I play DAO. But I do it because it's part of the game and I have to in order to progress.

As far as the mage/templar war is concerned, I would think that a large part of the interest would come from the first two games and the Asunder novel, leading right into it. A "what happens now?" scenario, which should lead you to playing the game. If you are not, or have never been, interested in this issue at all, I'm not really sure, aside from connecting it to some issue you are interested in (like darkspawn or Qunari or something), what they can do to make you interested.

If you don't have any interest in the game's plot, why would you buy it?

The plot in DA:O was to save the country from the Blight; the plot in ME3 is to save the galaxy from the reapers. If you don't find those interesting, then why would you buy those games?

If you don't want to be involved in the Templars vs. Mages plot, don't buy the game. If you don't feel that's interesting to you, leave the game on the store shelf and spend your money elsewhere.
