However, given that the focus of this game seems to be focused on Mage/Templar conflict, I think it would be a monumentally stupid move for them to force you to play as a Mage, or not allow you to play as one.

Restricting class selection to a Mage? Don't see it happening. At all. Nope.
They removed race selection and background selection, it's a possibility if a change of plan demands it.

Not to say its totally impossible, but there's nothing to suggest it happening one way or the other. We could speculate that the entire game will be with all Qunari NPCs as well - that doesn't mean we have any suggestion or evidence of it.

The answer is yes, it will.
I have no doubt that it'll be a bit or maybe alot different than the last two games but they won't cut out classes.
I can say that with 100% certainty.

Keep in mind also that smaller interactive decisions can also be detrimental to the overall flow and playstyle of many potential fans of Dragon Age that are out there. And so to facilitate the success of any and all players all minor interactive decisions have been removed in order to let the designers choose your grandest path to victory possible!
Yes, Dragon Age 3 will be a cornucopia of dramatic tension and action rising to new heights, and you'll be able to bring your friends along for the ride! Every half hour of gameplay will be enhanced by the new "morale" system in which the more of your friends you have online and playing, the more success your character will have! There may even be dramatic moments in which you must rally your friends to play the game as well in order to get your character to survive.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Having heard the sheer outcry for player control over appearance it has been decided that not only will there be a wide selection of customizable gear for you and all your companions to browse through using Dragon Age Points; but your friends will be able to get in on the action!
Yes indeed, custom fan made items will be available through the easily accessible and daily updated Dragon Age Storefront. You will even be able to sell your own items to your friends for real money!* This and many more features available in the always updated and online only Dragon Age, coming early 2013.
*Please note, EA and associated partners will be charging an 85% convenience fee for any and all merchandise sold through the Dragon Age Storefront and affiliated.

I'd be fine with that if it allowed them to make the PC's class have a larger role in the narrative, Especially if they added branching quest lines for specializations.
^^This. And I think it was Mike that talked about maybe only picking one specialization but have that one really matter. So I doubt that they will suddenly wake up and remove classes.

If about 50% of people played a mage instead of the other two classes to the end of the game, then Bioware will scrap the Warrior and Rogue classes and just keep the Mage.

Simplification even in that aspect would really make me decide not to think about getting the game at all.
There are enough games that have a fixed PC and BW needs to have something different to offer to make a at least a difference there.

I agree with the sentiment: if they remove classes to simplify even more the gameplay, it would be really bad. But imho, a true classless RPG system (not an action game with RPG elements like AC or Batman) can offer the same level of depth and choices (even more, it depends on the scope: just look at The Secret World charachter system: it's mind blowing) while not being at odds with the supposed storydriven (and cinematic) nature of Bioware's game of late.
Imho, a class system is perfect for hack & slash action RPGs but it's not the best tool for games that focus so much on the story and the writing. Instead it creates all kind of innatural and metagaming problems.

I happen to like the mage class. It is my preferred class by far in DAO. In DA2 I switch between mage and rogue. I would still buy the game. It might limit my replayability after two or so times, but I would still buy it.

I know some people will buy it but if they do that I think they will receive more negative response than DA2 because instead of giving more options and choices they are going to give you less than DA2 and I think that is not good

race was only needed in Origins to show the player the different worlds and culture, that wasnt needed so much in Da2. classes have a significant role in roleplaying, playing different classes gives you different play styles. now im not saying they couldnt easily get rid of the other classes, but i dont see why they would think of getting rid of them.

Seeing what might be planned for the main character(I won't spoil it), there is potential to be either, though your companions are bound to have strong opinions about it.
For example, a mage would have a problem trusting a non mage at a time like this, or if you are mage, a templar might just try to kill you.
