riiight so, im playing threw the series again, an i've struck an odd ball of sorts that i can't seem to find the answer to, durring Freedoms Progress, when you 1st meet Veetor an are shown video surveillance of the Collecters, your given a choise of "whats a collecter?" and "whats it doing here"--- here is what bothers my curiosity, durring ME1 i do not recall ever finding the slightest hint of collecters....anywhere, and yet shepard- who normally has to be force fed knowledge to talk about it- suddenly blurts out "I thought the collecters kept to themselves, whats it doing here?"

so ya, where did shepard gain the knowledge of a collector/what they've done? cuz i've not been able to dig up this answer no matter how i search google/wiki/forums:(

I have only choosen the "what's a collector?" option.

What does Shepard say when you select "what's it doing here"?

I ask because sometimes different choices give the same dialog.

However, you could also look at it as...not caring who or what it is...just why is it there...so you can complete your mission.

ya that thought crossed my mind, but shepard blurts out "i thought they keep to themselves" meaning somewhere/somehow shepard gained knowledge of them

I guess the same could be said about the Prothean knowledge at the beginning of ME1. If you choose that dialog option, Shepard mentions things about the Protheans that the player (you) doesn't know.

So I guess it's all about how you roleplay your character. Does your Shepard know about them already or not. Your choice.

ya but that intel was actually common, apparently everyone knows who protheans were/why they are important, but the collecters...the wiki slaps em as a myth... and that kinda fits, ya i can bite that, shepard heard...no wait no no no, shepards been out for 2 years for durring the collecters recent activity...

unless... maybe he read some news reports?  or a data pad of some ...stuff... reports of some sort, on his way to Freedoms colony? so im to guess theres no direct point where we can say where, but shepards just somehow heard of collecters ...:?

Nothing is stopping you from always choosing the "what's a collector" option.

So you have the choice to either, suspend disbelief and headcannon that your shepard already knows...or you can select the choice where your shepard had no prior information of the collectors.

Fortunately, you're not forced to select one or the other.

Also...if there was an answer to "where did shepard gain the knowledge of a collector/what they've done?"...

...then selecting "what's a collector" would make no sense.

yea well, my shepard detroyed several cerberus stations/ships in ME1, yet when jacob revealed shepard was revived by cerberus, there was the option "never heard of them" along with the others, so when shepard stated that line for the collectors, i was hell bent to find whatever detail i've missed that was collector related, im not forced or anything, its just i want to know what the heck i missed

but... based on the replies im getting here, im guessing its just a ghost detail that, like you've said, its just a role play for those who've read the novels or something

We're not playing Shepard from birth and s/he's had a whole career prior to the beginning of ME1 plus possible unseen events in the course of the game. For example, what was Shepard reading on the way to Ilos when the LI comes in? This is an RPG so the answer is whatever you want Shepard to have been reading. Footy scores or engineering reports.... or Alliance intelligence on Collectors or even tabloid tinfoil hat speculation about Collectors. That's just a for instance, there's plenty of behind the scenes opportunity for Shepard to have come across them but they're obscure enough for it not to be a given.

So the "What's a Collector?"/"What's it doing here?" conversation options boil down simply to whether you want your Shepard to have previously heard of Collectors or not. If you're role playing that Shepard's heard of them then "What's it doing here?" makes sense, and if you're role playing that s/he hasn't then "What's a Collector?" makes sense too. I suppose you could even role play that Shepard's knows of Collectors but pretends not to because of not fully trusting Jacob and Miranda and Cerberus. You might even be playing a Renegade-y Shepard who's never heard of them but is far too badass to give a rip what it is  and so goes stright to idle curiosity about why it's here while considering what gun would be best to shoot it with. That's stretching things a bit - most, but not all, of my Sheps have heard of Collectors and pick the appropriate option. It's player choice and since it's just slightly different ways of getting to the same exposition dialogue it has no more meaning than if the game paused and asked you "Has your Shepard head of these things? Y/N " instead of offering a conversation wheel.

Right....I believe I mentioned that in my previous post.

Sorry, misread you there by reading the post in isolation. Looked like you were replying to the one above, which I see now that you weren't because that was you as well. FYI when you want to add to something you've said it's just as easy to edit your post as it is to make a new one.

Also, consider that it's for the gamer who has never heard about collectors until now. I always figured shepard had heard of them so never delved into the questions until a recent play. Also, I didn't care since they were responsible for abductions. It didn't matter what they were so much as why they were abducting human and how to stop them. Most of the questions in the wheel are often directed toward the player gaining more info since generally just enough comes out along the way without the questions to understand. I think Illusive Man gives just enough info regarding them so that asking becomes irrelevant. I think it's really about the gamer being curious about this new entity.
