Are mages the only ones at risk of demon posession? The codex mentions that demons are drawn to magic and can also be bound to lyrium-derived objects. (DAO quest Asunder; the Rock Wraiths in the DA2 Deep Roads.) We also saw a templar recruit turn into an abomination.
True, that recruit was unwillingly possessed, but isn't that how most possessions occur anyway? And why would he turn into an abomination at all since he wasn't a mage? This could mean that anyone with mana could become an abomination and fun fact? The codex specifically says that mana is within everyone, but only a few people (mages) have the potential to unlock that mana.
So deduction would say, anyone can become an abomination? Or at the very least, the "non-magical but magical" knights of the templars are just as vulnerable to possession as mages because of their heavy lyrium usage.

Tarohne made some magics to allow the templar recruits to be possessed. Demons can possess mages alone, to possess other people they need help from a mage.

Finding a regular person to possess is like finding an ant in the dark night. Mage on the other hand is a shinning beacon. And the ones that got possesed in DA2 were ants that the beacon lighted up for demons to see.

WIth the assistance of a blood mage, demons can possess non-mages like the templar recruit in Enemies Among Us. Otherwise, the only way for demons to possess mortals is if the Veil is especially thin.

Demons can possess any one or thing, but they prefer mages.

Pretty sure no one can possess a demon. Although you could argue that Wynne's case is one of demon possession.
But it typically is the other way around. Demonic possession is far more common.

In DA:O, it seems that spirits could possess trees. (Sylvans.)

In DAA, Anders says Mr. Wiggums (a cat) was possessed by a rage demon and took out three templars before being killed.
A thinking mind/will seems to be a special obstacle for demons looking to possess living creatures, unless the mind belongs to a mage, or extraordinary measures are taken (Tarhone and Co.). But it's probably not impossible.

It would apear that just about anything living can be possessed, though it is easiest for them to possess mages. This likely comes down to to the fact that its easier to pinpoint and make the transition into the physical world the stronger one's connection to the fade is. (sort of like comparing sending data via dialup or high speed fiber optic cable.)

They can possess dead things as well. The lesser demons usually turn into different types of skeletons, but if something like a pride demon possesses a body; they turn either into an arcane horror (from a dead mage) or a revenant (regular dead person).
So basically, demons always go after a mage if they are able to. The mage gives them open access to the Fade, where they can now rain down hellfire and damnation as an abomination, but if there isn't a mage in the area; demons will settle for just about anything.

Demons can and will possess pretty much anything, but they are attracted to power or the potential for power, hence the focus on mages.

Demons can possess anything, living or dead. They can possess animals and even trees (sylvans).
Now, I have no idea how a tree, animal or corpse makes a bargain with a demon, but the demon must be able to interact with its potential host for possession to take place. That means either the demon is in the mortal plane, or the mortal is in the demon's plane (the Fade) and the demon can communicate with it.
The difference between a mage and a mundane abomination is reportedly that the mage's link to the Fade can grant the demon greater powers (note also that some mages have intrinsically stronger links to the Fade than others). Thus a mage host would be more desirable to a demon who wanted to fling fireballs around, but a mundane king would be more desirable to a demon who wanted to wield political power over an entire nation.

Here's how it works as I understand it:
Demons are totally cut off from the mortal world and can only watch the dreams of mortals with envy. The one exception to this rule occurs where the Veil is thin, and demons can sometimes slip through the cracks in the divide between worlds. That's how creatures like sylvans and most walking corpses are created; a demon makes its way out of the Fade and, desperate for a host, it chooses something that has no will to resist possession. Trees and dead bodies are the most likely target. Or it learns to adapt to its surroundings and becomes a shade.
But demons can possess mages at any time, provided the mage is either willing or unable to resist. For example, Thrask's daughter became an abomination because she was terrified of the slavers who were threatening her. Also, mages can use blood magic to bring demons out of the Fade and give them form, so demons are also eager to give mortals that power to open a passage into the real world.
