The Witcher 2 is pretty kick ass - I really need to finish playing it, but I keep getting distracted by other games. DX

So far this year, (and not counting games that released last year I'm still playing) my favorites would be:
Mass Effect 3 on the PC, Dragon's Dogma on console. Risen 2: Dark Waters after that, but mostly because it really pushes my swashbuckling buttons.

I'd say Crusader Kings 2. It's an evil time eating game. I'm hoping the new X-Com will be able to challenge the throne.

Well these days I only buy half dozen games each year which I think might enjoy and that stand out from the crowd.
This year are ME3 and Diablo 3 plus Legend of Grimrock. All those games have flaws so while they make top games of year (so far) I am sure will be ones I might enjoy more like X-COM Enemy Unknown will certainly make this list and be one of top ones when released. But they are most enjoyable ones I have played this year so far.
Last year was Skyrim, Deus Ex:HR and Witcher 2. LA Noire I haven't picked up but when do I think will be a great game worthy of being on this list. Dragon Age 2 and Fable 3 I cannot say they deserve to be in the top games of year because they are just okay (imho). I only mention them due to being so few decent RPGs in that year. The DA2 DLC was getting better each one released. Fable 3 had some nice elements.
Year before that Red Dead Redemption, Star Ocean: Last Hope, Dragon Age Awakening+Witch Hunt. Mass Effect 2 and DLC I put in same class as Dragon Age 2 and Fable 3. It does not deserve to be in the best of the year (imho). It's okay but thats about it as far as I am concerned, too many elements I did not enjoy for it to make it to best of year.

It's probably too hardcore for you, but I thought it came out like a few years ago.
It's definitely not a 2012 title.

The same company also released My girlfriend is the President in the US this year, which is highly amusing considering upcoming elections and all.
The Japanese take on US culture is hilarious. Pity Metal Wolf Chaos never made it.

The only new release games I've played this year are The Walking Dead, ME3, and Spec Ops: The Line. Out of those I'd say Spec Ops, however, The Walking Dead is very, very close, and ME3 was alright.
I've mainly been checking out the big releases I've missed over the past few years, I played both Bioshocks, Dead Space, Bastion, Oblivion, Far Cry 2 and currently playing Deus Ex: HR. I still have GTA 4 and Dragon Age to start.

Mass Effect 3 so far. But I haven't bought many games this year.

Released in 2012? ME3, though I've hardly played new ones other than that this year.
Bought in 2012? Likely either The Witcher 2, Planescape: Torment, or Arcanum.
