I am playing the game on nightmare (always have) and never changed the setting. I chose not to summon the Mabari dog as that wasn't originally in the game. I play as a duel weilding rogue. Anyways..... I tried quite a few times to get Anders join my party, but that templar hunter was too much to deal with at the time. So I decided to grind some levels and wait until I almost won't have anymore quests to do. I was short of a little experience to gain a level (I was level 10 or 11 at the time), and thought I'll do the Legacy DLC which I thought would take 5-6 hours or so. How wrong was I. Took more than a few days and for about a week and a half, I put in 3-4 hours each night trying to kill Corypheus. I ended up resorting to guides but they didn't renew anything for me. On a couple of occasions I managed to get to the third phase but was lacking healing potions (I had 4 healing potions and 5 elfroot potions or so). My party was Bethany, Merill, and Aveline.

I thought about sharing my strategy for defeating Coypheus. Hopefully, other people who are in a similar situation to mine would benefit from this.

What is common to all the phases is that once you deactive a statue, two shades appear. Initially, they are "dormant" for a few seconds. This is an excellent opporunity to put mark of death (from me playing a rogue), hex of torment (my Merill), followed by winter grasp. Following that, assassinate or twin fangs usually does the trick or most of it. This works regardless of which phase against Corypheus you're on.

Phase I (fire)
The first phase is quite easy. Aside from the just described trick above, keep close to the fire, and let your ranged attacks do the trick and if the shades close in, engage briefly in melee before running from the fire again.

Phase II (fire + maze)
The maze is annoying because many times party members will get stuck, stop moving, or take a bad route. The trick is to try moving them in a straight line. Choose all party members and move them to an "opening/passage". Make sure you have "hold position" so they won't start wondering around. If you see 4 circles all is good. If some circles disappear and the party member didn'nt get there, pause the game (radial menu) and repeat order movement. You should also always rotate the camera view to see how party members are doing or select the one which is the furthest behind.

Phase III (fire + maze + lightning + icicle)
This is a tough one. Never move your party members directly to an "opening/passage" even if it is clear of lightning. It may be active by the time they get there. The MOST important thing which took me a while to figure out is how to avoid the falling icicles. Prior to falling, you'll see some ice "drops" forming on the ground and eventually an icicle will drop. You will have to constantly monitor your way and pause the game every few seconds. I would try activating 2 statues at a time. Try not to kill the shades immediately and just live them with enough health so you can kill them quickly. This comes handy when meeting them later on so you can refill your party members health (I didn't have Anders with group heal). I noticed that the health granted for party members from killing shades only occurs if they are at close proximity and your character makes the kill.

General tips
  • There is a long straight passage somewhere in the maze, which I always use to put some distance between me and the fire catching up from behind. This is also a good place to meet shades at the end because you'll have relatively a lot of time to engage before the fire catches up.
  • The icicle tip is the most important as icicles can easily kill a party member (at least the weaker ones) immediately.
  • Always heal before using potions - try to save as many after phase 3.
  • When combatting Coypheus, pause the game when he initiates the fireball. You can easily escape it by moving the party member who is targeted.
  • If you have a special uber strike (twin fangs, assassinate), always try first to put hex of torment for the extra damage.
  • When Corypheus has the purple lighting around him, this is where ranged attachs and firestrom/tempest work best.
  • Use healing spells and potions smartly.
  • I stopped the game every few seconds in the last phase in order to assess the situation. That definitely saved my life as this was the only way of avoiding the icicles.
The most important things are how to move your party (so the won't get stuck) and avoiding the icicles. When you finally slay Corypheus (and you will), immediately save three unique save points just incase something happens.

Cool, I have yet to make a nightmare run on this game, but when I do, I will remember to look this up. Oh and congrats on beating Cory.

Thanks. After I defeated him, every other fight in the game seems easy. :-)
