I've been writing some fan fiction and going through some of the plot of ME, and I had to address the colonist shepard plot line a bit.
Whereas the earthborn and spacer Shepard might not be affected that much if at all, the colonist Shepard would be. I think the dreams with vent boy should only have affected colonist Shepard. The other background should have had different dream sequences.
Colonist Shepard was on Mindoir and saw her parents killed by Batarians, and most of the colony was either taken or slaughtered by Batarian slavers. Shepard was 16 at the time, true, but one cannot believe that she was not traumatized by it. It is likely that Shepard was hiding throughout the raid.
My colonist Shepard became ruthless and hated Batarians.
I still think that the ships doctor should have had a larger role.
Vent Boy would affect Colonist Shepard

I agree, and it's completely contradictory to my canon Sole Survivor Shepard, if they should be getting any kind of post traumatic stress it should be from Akuze.

Ideally, I would have liked to have seen the child on Earth not appearing in the dream sequences, at least not with an imported Shepard. I theorise that Ventkid was used in the sequences since he could be, ahem, "related" to by any player, whether they had played the entire trilogy or just picked up an ME3 copy.
Imported Sheps should see the people they knew who are no longer among the living, rather than an ambiguous child. Ash/Kaidan, those who fell on the suicide mission, Thane and Legion in the later sequences- the list goes on. I think the sound and voice work in the dreams was evocative, but the visuals were lacking.

I think the dream sequences if any, after seeing the vent kid, for colonist, should have flashed back to Mindoir.
For sole survivor, to maybe Akuze. Again Shepard would have been hiding out of sight and splatter of the thresher maw.
For spacer, the Einstein which responded to Mindoir, Shepard would have seen the horrors inflicted on the dead colonists.
Still there always would be the ones who were lost appearing, because there were always losses.
There shouldn't have been a generic dream for imports. Any losses on the SM should have been included. "I wash my hands, most of the time." -- if you were late. I know it would have cost a bit more to do this stuff. No, not really. For non-imported Shepards, I think they still selected profiles, though.

Stupid symbolism is stupid symbolism, glowboy is glowboy. Even with default, unimported Shepard, it should be based on backround completely. I'd like to see the Battle of Torfan play out as well, I always thought that was a stressful situation, atleast for Paragon/Paragade.

Spacer Sheps have the defense of Elysium too.
Admittedly the Ventkid acts as a catalyst (hurr c wat i did thar) for Shepard's apparent trauma, but there is no end of more relevant imagery that could have been used rather than the war's latest casualty. Shepard would surely fixate upon those he/she knows or knew.

Great, so it works for THAT Shepard. My Sole Survivor Spacer, however, says Vent Boy can go sod off and let me brood over losing my entire unit for giant worms because of Cerberus.

Actually I had an idea for the dreams. It starts as normal, with you chasing after the child. But at the end of each dream is something different.
At the first sequence it's either the virmire sacrifice or someone from ME2 you sacrificed. In the next dream it's more people, this time all the characters you lost in ME1 and ME2, even minor ones, along with the ones who died in ME3.
Than at the last sequence, it's everyone. Just a mass of people all surronding shepard, people from all over the galaxy, and they all die.

I disagree. Seeing the Reapers actually rounding people up for processing would affect Colonist Shepard.
