I copied my BG 2 folder and installed SCS on it. I am now ready to start a new game with this installation. However, I didn't change any config files or registry entries. Do I need to change something before I start playing with this installation?
However, I ran into some things that gave me concern. Namely, when I tried to import my save from my Tutu, my SCS BG 2 couldn't find it. So then I tried character files, but then couldn't find those either (in the interface). Eventually I got my characters imported via character files by putting them into the characters folder of my non-SCS install of BG 2.
My concern is I want to be using the SCS files for my game, and that won't happen if the game is looking in the normal BG 2 folder - do I need to change something else somewhere?
Thanks for any and all replies, I'd like to get started soon as I can, but would also like to be using my new SCS files too.
Possible problem with my SCS BG 2 install

I think your SCS install is OK but having two game folders has issues as the game is probably referring to the Windows registry which will only point to the non SCS version. I'm sure there is a clever/documented way of adding another version to the registry (I'd guess along the lines of rename the SCS exe version to SCS.exe and create registry entries for that which are identical to the BG2 ones but with the alternate folder name) but the easiest way I found is described below.
Rename your original BG2 folder (e.g. c:\\games\\BG2 becomes c:\\games\\BG2original) then rename the SCS version to the original folder name. If you want to switch back rename the SCS version to BG2SCS then BG2original to BG2. Remember only to rename folders when the game is not started otherwise you could end up in a horrible mess (been there, done that, re-installed!)
edit, & if you haven't changed your baldur.ini file that usually has folder names in it. You could try just changing that first but I suspect there is more to it than that, and the method I described above means the ini file can remain unedited.

On the G3 site there was a mod to install multiple installs of Baldur's Gate at the same time, wasn't there?

Gate70 your initial suggestion is simple enough and addresses my concerns, thanks!

A very fast way to make multiple installs is just
(i) copy the game to a new folder
(ii) edit baldur.ini and replace any references to the old folder with the new ones
(iii) run the game by clicking bgmain.exe rather than through baldur.exe

Agreed, that's what I now do after reading the link I posted - safer/easier than renaming two folders each run and has worked for a few days without issue, or at least any more issues than already affected my multiplayer setup.
Also the link mentions that the CD2-CD5 folders are not required for copies and the baldur.ini file can point to the original location for them. I've tried this on one install and it appears to work - saves 1gb or so per copy.
My experience on Linux is that some mods will only install to the default version even if you invoke it from the copy, not sure if the same applies on Windows but if the mod references the Windows registry at any stage it will happen.
So my method now is to modify under the original name with my base install safely called something else. Once modded I'll change it to a meaningful name, eg BGTSCSASC for BGT with SCS and Ascension, change the ini file and remove CD2-CD5 folders.
