If you need to have some non-trivial amount of time pass in a game, days, weeks, months etc. How would you show this?
1. Fade to black (BG2 when captured by illithid)
2. Chapter X display
3. DM voice "x time has come and gone..."

4. You're gonna need a montage.
5. A conversation, maybe with a few good static shots, talking about how time has passed and things have changed.
6. Show something else that symbolizes the passage of time, like a sunset/sunrise, clocktower, ship coming into port, cows coming home, whatever.

How about the spirit meter? Can this be used behind the scenes without the player being aware of it? Or maybe this does address what you mean.
The time/date is displayed with the option button.

If it is a really, really long time, perhaps a scenic strip can be created that has four different seasonal appearances, depending on where the camera is placed. The camera can then fade between the different seasonal views. But in that case a montage would work just as well.
Fable just used narrated cut-scene stories, which seemed to work okay.
