during the opening cutscene (where i see ashley for the 1st time) her face is all blacked out. do i have to turn something on/off to remedy that?

You didn't provide any details about your PC, so it's almost impossible to diagnose the problem. Post some hardware specifics along with driver information. Screenshots would help too.

The Geforce 9400 GT is a rebranded Geforce 8500 GT, which is technically below the system requirements. Still, I don't think that should make the game look worse, just make it run slower.
A problem I had with my Nvidia graphics card is that they became less stable when updating the drivers. Nvidia's driver updates, while supported for older cards, are actually meant for newer cards, and can cause problems when used for older hardware. My suggestion would be to look for a video driver that came out at around the same time as this game did and install that.
