 IF you're a random, lets face it, you suck. here are some things that can help. stop saving equipment for platinum, believe me buddy, its never gonna happen. Make your character as strong as possible. use the best gear and equipment you have. And seriously, this is the most important bit - Use your consumables.
You'll still be dead last and a pain but it wont be quite so damn frustrating carrying your useless ass though 11 bloody waves! 
(this is aimed at randoms playing gold, I dont give a damn what you do on silver and bronze)
P.s I dont play with randoms on platinum (ever) but I would imagine its much the same situation.

Edit: after reading some posts, here's more clarification
Is it wrong to think that a silver standard player should play on silver? 
I have no qualms with low lvl players. I do however take issue when someone who is not a gold standard player brings a poorly thought out character with no gear or equipment into a gold match.

a player who would rather fail than use one of his precious med gels. This is the type of player that i refer to as a random. A player who has no real ambition towards winning the mach or contributing in any way.
If you choose to defend that type of player or if you are one yourself, well from me to you - Go F**k yourself.

Ummm aren't you also a random to them since you are playing with randoms? So then that makes you just as bad doesnt it, as a random playing with other randoms?

I know how you feel. I've had a few bad matches today as well. And by bad I mean that my score was usually above 160,000 and nobody else even passed 70,000. But whining here isn't going to help...

it is very difficult to score less than 10,000 I suppose that should be comended.

It is all just luck of the draw. I always find it funny when I run into friends of mine that are appearing offline, while in matchmaking.

I think it's just worse than usual this weekend because people are attempting the squad goal in PUGs. Why they think it's a good idea to do this in a PUG Gold is a different story...

Lol, I feel you Ballistic. I managed to luck out and have some painless Gold/Glacier/Cerberus runs with the PUGs I was hosting today. It was clear everyone was trying to not use any consumables, but they used them when they knew they were needed. There was a bad game with a N7 75, but I took the risk by giving them the chance.

There might be a reason they're not using consumables this weekend. Just throwing that out there.

Also, how can all the other players in a random match come dead last?
