The level 4 spell 'Otiluke's Resilient Sphere' has no save when placed on party members and stops all damage... it can be dispelled however.
Oddly enough whenever i cast it on a party member they keep saving against it.

I'm pretty sure that is modded behavior.ussnorway wrote...

I have searched Google about this just now:
I found a gibberlings mod called [url=http://www.gibberlings3.net/readmes/readme-spell_rev.htmlSpell Revisions[/url] which has a component which removes save on allies, so it appears my sphere is supposed to be resisted against by my characters; i think i'd rather have the BG1 version since i never use it against enemies. Question is, what are good ways to prevent this (do spells become harder to resist for higher level mages?)

Not without mods, no. If a save is offered, then it is purely based on the save of the individual/monster the spell is being cast upon. The higher the character level, the lower he has to roll to make the save, thus the less likely ottiluke will be effective.
Also, for clarity, know that magic resistance is different from making a save vs. spells. When an unfriendly spell (generally, white and red icons) is cast at a character, the first check is the character's magic resistance, assuming the spell does not bypass magic resistance (a la Sunfire). Magic resistance is percentage-based. So 20% gives a 1 in 5 chance that the spell is ineffective. If the spell gets past any magic resistance and the spell offers the chance to save, then the character rolls a d20 to see if he saves.
EDIT: Damn - beaten to the punch again.

I used to cast it on the guy at the top of Durlag's Tower to stop him escaping.
Unfortunately a patch was introduced to stop my tactics.
(You got a helm of opposite alignment which could be used by druids, the only helm they could wear, and of course being true neutral, had no effect other than protection from critical hits.)

Yeah i think his save vs. spell is negative because he saves even when he rolls a 1.
Helm of opposite alignment should be made easier to get hold of in my opinion... it's a very fun item which doesn't really benefit anyone in any way (idk if it makes evil character stop leaving or not). The fact that with either that patch or using BGT you can't get the helm other than via shadow/gatekeeper is very cheap.
