Kai Leng was at least a little respectable in Retribution. Mostly because he wasn't a wannabe anime-ninja, but more of a character than a stereotype.

If he hadn't been such a wimp and hid behind his minions the second it starts to go south and did more of the acting than talking (not to mention having something better than that really silly outfit which would make Adam Jensen laugh his glasses off) then I think he would have been okay.

My problem is that I'd never read any of the novels, and had no context for the guy. Who is he? What does he want? Why does he hate Shepard so much? Why is Shepard his nemesis? Why does his armor have press-on nails? It's like he just decided he was going to be Shepard's personal enemy and wouldn't go away until he reciprocated.

Remember that one episode of South Park where they're playing ninjas and Butters, tired of being ignored, dresses up as Professor Chaos and attacks them? And then gets a throwing star stuck in his eye? Yeah, that's Kai Leng. Kai Leng is the Butters of Mass Effect.

I disagree. At least, partly. I felt that Loghain was a well-written rival. By the end of DA:O , I couldn't wait to kill him.

Kai Leng suffered from Lackey syndrome. His sole purpose was to be at the beck and call of TIM. He never really had a personality because the one person who ever wrote him correctly left Bioware.

By the end of ME3, I wanted him to die so badly, but not because he was a worthy rival, but because he was so insipidly annoying, I couldn't stand him.

Maybe if Karpyshyn would've stayed around if JUST to write that one character...
