Kei Lang is so childish.... And Shepard is so childish around him.

This...THIS IS AMAZING. And that doesn't even include the visions of every possible way Adam Jensen would execute this sad excuse for a character.

Kai Leng makes James look like a good character.

And I hate James.

I can see what they were trying to do with Kai Leng. That doesn't make him any less abysmal.....

But honestly, Leng is just the worst offender of one of the biggest problems ME3 has: with most of the character writers from ME1 and 2 gone, the new writers simply did not know how to write previously established characters without reducing them to their most basic and simplest characterization while simultaneously removing much of the depth they previously had.

I'd say its cause when it comes to actaul rival characters.

BW kinda sucks at it.

They tend to make Heroes massive player empowerment fantasies that noone in universe can take in a fair fight-unless your villian is a borderline god... and even then it could have gone either way-

With Leng, They never really give him a personality... His just thier to give Cerberus troops an actaul face cause fighting TIM would be wierd. IE Leng wasn't brought in to be a character, His just the Cerberus Avatar-which says a whole lot about Cerberus in ME3-

So they resort to the most basic insults and Cerberus spins they can think of.

with Shepard... You'd think with Shepard clearly being more scriopted by the writers then the players BW would give us an interesting Protagonist. Shepard is so freaking bland it hurts

They clearly have a default alignment in mind so it's jarring when you do something extreme paragon or renegade. and let's be honest Default Shepard is the most incompentent boob in the universe.

so you'd think with a scripted Shepard, they could come up with better banter then essential two full grown adults argueing with 2nd grader insults.

I vehemetly dislikes Kai Leng not because he defeated Shep at Thesia (I actually like that part. Hey, you can't always win :P) but omg his character. Not to mention that e-mail he sends pretty much screams 'kiddie tantrum' I honestly face palmed. Give me a rival worthy of respect like Saren that talks and behaves like a professional killer / soldier / agent.
I remember always anticipating to fight Saren and took him seriously. In ME3 I just can't wait to kill KL not because he killed my friend or he's Cerberus top assassin, but mainly because he's just so damn annoying like a rookie ninja that got expelled from Konoha and wanted so bad to be Shep's rival.

Kai Leng was actually pretty good in the 3rd novel. He wasn't Mr Personality but he also wasn't a petty ninja.

Personally I have no issue with Shepard "losing" on Thessia but the way Shepard losses was a bit odd. You beat up Kai Leng and then a gunships shoots pillars so the roof falls on you. Erm...

In ME1 you have a fight with Saren where you punch him in the face and he runs off and it doesn't feel so bad...

That is because it's the outside circumstances that prompt Saren (and Shepard) to leave. Thessia feels so weird because you have to "win" the fight until Leng goes: "Haha, I have a gunship."
IMO they should have just done the same thing as on Virmire and they had the perfect opportunity, too. I mean, there are reapers all around the place.
If suddenly a massive reaper leg came through the ceiling, forcing Shepard down and allowing Leng to get away, I think this scene would hardly have gotten the negative attention it has.

As for Leng and Shep, I agree, it's one of these instances where you can see that different writers were responsible for different NPCs and got to write Shepard during their dialogues. So the writer in charge of Leng takes control of Shepard in these moments as well. I think this is one of the main reason why BW characters are often either liked or hated but rarely ignored. It's because when they interact, it's not only the NPC that acts different, it's Shepard as well.
And yes, Leng was childish and bland and he had more "colour" in Retribution. (I never read Deception but I hear he gets into cereals and toothbrushes and the like so maybe that's when the transformation took place.;))

Very true. From the start he never seemed very mature to me, more like a teenager with a permanent temper tantrum. :)

A lot of this can be explained if you go by the theory that the Illusive Man suffers from Second Childhood Syndrome. Between the super secret, yet highly conspicuous research labs, the femme fatale catsuit-wearing operatives, the hordes of faceless goons and cyborg ninjas that make up his personal army, the Illusive Man strikes me as a shrewd and successful buisness man who has deluded himself into thinking he's a James Bond villain.

The simple fact that he utters more dialogue than Harbinger is reason enough to abhor him.

lol Kai Leng is my most hated Mass Effect villian. And not because he's a good villian either. I hate everything about him, he represents the mediocrity of Mass Effect 3. He is the villian Mass Effect 3 deserved.

I hated Kai Leng. Was so easy to damage on all the levels where he was boss. In the temple was so easy to damage his health and in the station he was dead in 5 minutes. YMIR mechs are harder to defeat than Kai Leng! They should of given him biotic barriers, shields, armour and then his health and a shadow broker type recharge and cut scene especially as he was the only "boss" fight in the entire game.

I don't know if I'm more fortunate having not read the books, and so don't have an image of Kai Leng that was tarnished by his terrible portrayal in the game. The only Kai Leng I know is a completely awful character. It's a shame that that is probably a good thing.

The main problems for me are
1. every scene with Kai Leng has Shepard become completely incompetent that or his IQ drops dramatically, most of the time shep just stands there and lets Kai Leng do what he wants (Citadel, Thessia to a lesser extent)and when shepard does act he fire two/three shots and tthen just sits there and lets Leng do what he wants.

2. There is a huge disconnect between the fight and his cut scene performance in the Thessia fight

3.The impregnable shield.....enough said.

4. The email

Kai Leng was made out to be Shepard's equal by several characters but upon meeting him he does very little to reinforce it. In fact he makes both Shepard and himself look completely incompetent, Shepard just stands there completely passive to whats going on and Kai Leng must resort to the insta-win cutscenes that involve an ultra-powerful shield and using a gunship to win (the same model gun ship that in the past Shepard blew out of the sky).

I know that there are moments where the hero must lose either in gameplay or script, but for me losing to Kai Leng doesn't fell like a loss but like someone hijacked my game and then beat me over the head with it, then finally taunts me about the fact he won by cheating.

I can deal with Beatrix slaughtering my party in FF9 (mostly because she actually looks competent and powerful) the same with other games as long as the reason the character lost is portrayed well, but Kai Leng is like an infinitely worse Malak scene where you go from completely dominating him (gameplay)to being caught in a stasis field (cutscene).

Mac Walters wrote most of the biggest roles, including Kai Leng, and i think he's gotten used to writing comic-style characters from his experience at Darkhorse, because that seemed very apparent in the case of Kai Leng.
