Kei Lang is so childish.... And Shepard is so childish around him.

Then Mass Effect Deception happened.

I really expected more of Kai Leng from the third novel because I was ready to kick his ass.

I heard about the problems with deception but didn't actually read into it, what exactly is wrong with the book?

It was such a jarring character change to the point that Kai Leng was no longer the same person.

Basically Kai Leng was reduced from a serious psychopathic villian to someone who steals cereal because it gives him a thrill and ... that apparently, peeing in vases is pretty awesome.

Ouch
I never really got into the ME books, I've read the Dragon Age books Stolen Throne and The Calling and was considering reading Mass Effect Revelation (its on my kindle at the moment but I've yet to actually start it).
Back to Kai Leng his portrayal in 3 reminds me of the incompetent villians usually prevelant in comic books, the ones that serve as nothing more than filler character's. The same villains that the hero never takes seriously.

KL is less annoying than Harbinger.
Harbinger didn't actually annoy me, his quotes mid battle can grate a bit though I think the one I heard most was "I know you feel this Shepard"
Kai Leng wouldn't be nearly so bad for me if his scenes were done better.

I think that the urination in vases thing is possible the most useful example in displaying the character assassination.Kia Purity wrote...

Kai Leng in Retribution: Rents an apartment, sets up a complex, electronical surveillance system that allows him to watch the comings and goings of Aria's people with an alarm system for when he has to attend to biological needs such as sleeping and using the bathroom.
Kai Leng in Deception: Chooses an occupied apartment for his stake out, ties the owner, stands in the same position with just a sniper rifle and pees in a vase.

To the idea of letting shep win on thessia, they could make it a matter of doing one mission instead of another. Do thessia first, get info on catalyst, but something bad happens. Do other mission, lose on thessia, but gain some other reward.
The problem with Thessia is that while Shep "loses" he never really got bested by Kai Leng. He whooped Kai Leng's ass as Leng said immature crap, and then lost to whoever was piloting the gunship.
It could have worked fine if Kai Leng had actually been a threat and beaten Shepard down, making us want him to get revenge

Agreed, if Shep really wanted to he could have radioed the Normandy and have KL's gunship blown to bits.
It was a forced "losing" for Shep. I agree he never really did lose to KL.

He was a pretty sorry excuse for a rival, not because he was petty, but because he never really accomplished any true menace. He couldn't seem to get anything done without the magical power of cutscenes making everyone around him suddenly stupid.
Thessia bugged me too, because my Shepard has a long list of people to blame before herself. Kai Leng, TIM, the Reapers, the asari in general, Tevos for being vague, even the Prothean Beacon ('security mode engaged'? Good job there, beacon). Of all the things my Shepard could blame herself for, Thessia is pretty far down the list.

The weird thing is, it seems like they were trying to make Kai Leng as childish and annoying as possible so you would hate him. But he was executed so poorly that I couldn't even muster that much interest. Whenever he showed up I was just like, "Oh, that guy again? Meh."

I know right. KL was so stupid as a villian. I mean heck, when he turns around to board the other shuttle after stabbing the Kodiak with the sword during the Coup Shep could have shot him in the back and he wouldn't have been able to put up his barrier.
The clone was a better villian than KL, and that's saying something seeing as how the clone is meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

Never minded the force losing, a lot of games do it, hell Witcher 2 did it. Did find the name calling stupid but people get annoyed at things so easily.
Again it's not so much the forced losing, it's the forced losing to a villain who doesn't seem to actually beat you.
