You obviously haven't played The Witcher 2 if you think Liara's scene in ME1 was anything noteworthy. In The Witcher It's practically softcore porn in the game with everything but camera shots of the actual genitals, but you have to watch it.

Oh, I think it would have made a lot of sense for her to be front and center in ME3. She was a great character and central to ME2. So, if I had been making predictions before ME3, I would have assumed the most important returning characters to the plot would have been Liara and Miranda. One of those turned out to be true, it is a little odd that Miranda wasn't more important in the overall story arc.

The same is pretty much true of all the other returning characters from ME2, particularly the ones that return to the Normandy. Tali and Legion's only major involvement is unlocking a third outcome of Rannoch, but even then, they both get substitutes that keep the plot going, and Miranda has her sister in the end to serve as hers (sort of). If Miranda was fixed to survive the SM no matter what, the plot could easily have her be a big part without issue.

I think they wanted to get her killed by Kai Leng. They went out of their way to make people not miss a beat, in preventing it.

Bleh.

Kai Leng is the worst antagonist in the series. I'm mad Thane died to him let alone Miranda.

Miranda is a great character. She doesn't rub everyone the right way, and that's actually okay, because most people who dislike her don't like her personality or motives. As opposed to Jacob, who a lot of people don't like because he *lacks* personality and motive for the actions he takes.

I also have a dangerous opinion about why *some* of the people who don't fall into the above category don't like Miranda. Dangerous because people get really passionate about feminism and I think she is the kind of character that sits at the heart of that debate.
