There weren't a lot of public lobbies running that setup, so I settled for a team that included a Geth Engineer, an Asari Justicar, and a Quarian Male Engineer. The GE and QME are both capable of putting out the DPS that's useful (maybe necessary) in Platinum, but the AJA was puzzling, considering the team. The GE also threw on a Particle Rifle I, and the QME and AJA both had an Acolyte. The AJA put on almost no equipment, just a gear mod, and the QME mentioned that the missile glitch worked on the Particle Rifle in the lobby, so I should have just left. Knew he'd be lagging a lot, too, since he was British and the others in the lobby clearly weren't. I threw on a GI with the Piranha and Talon, Armor Piercing IV, a Cyclonic Modulator IV, Shotgun Rail Amp III, and Densified Ammunition V, since I knew we were all heading to that tiny room, and I knew that nobody there had the DPS to hold a small area.
About 25 minutes later, they all down after the objective on wave 10. I decided to finish it out, because all 3 were escort missions, and I sort of thought you might have to finish the wave for it to count towards the op. Used a missile on two banshees, TC+PM+Piranha'd the **** out of two Atlases, and pulled out the Talon to shoot the smaller ones in the head while the people told me how pointless it was on the mic. Actually died just as the Talon shot connected with the face of the last phantom, but it got me right back up, since the wave was over. Let myself die during extraction, because why the hell not?
The next screen has medals for 75 kills, 75 shotgun kills, 25 pistol kills, 20 headshots, and 15 revives. I had about 135k while the second best (QME) had 65k. Two of them had a 5 revives medal, which sort of pissed me off for whatever reason. The GE seemed to never throw the turret out for the sake of shield restoration, mostly fired the particle rifle straight up (WHY!?), and tried to heavy melee phantoms every time they showed up by holding the melee button rather than holding until the animation starts, releasing, and doing it again. QME mostly ran around trying to create TBs with arc grenades and incinerate, but for whatever reason, he never seemed to use them on banshees to get their barriers down. The AJA put the bubble in front of the door, but I never saw a biotic explosion, and half the time, it wasn't up at all. The match had taken 29 minutes. When we saw this, one of them mentioned that it was a "pretty good time for a Platinum run" even though the same camping strategy usually takes about 20 minutes.
The two with mics were constantly talking about how ****ty the GE was, but based on the way the match went, I could be pretty damned sure that they wouldn't have won if someone of their skill level was there instead of me.
Clearly, randoms go to Gold/Platinum lobbies for a reason, but it seems like 90% of the time that I'm not playing with people from this forum or other friends, I end up doing most of the work with kills, objectives, and revives.
I truly don't understand; how do these people succeed when competent players seem to be so damned rare? I can't see how matches go if I'm not in them, so I have no idea how the process works when all four are randoms. If there were a constant string of failures, there wouldn't be a huge benefit to bumping up the difficulty, so they can't just lose constantly, right? Is it just a matter of players here killing things faster, and they would have actually been fine, just taken longer? I know when I've played with Ashen Earth, he outscores me (and everyone else) by a huge margin, so maybe it is just something similar.
Sorry... this text wall is mostly just venting, because matches like this are frustrating, especially when two of the ****ty players that probably got carried are berating the other constantly.
tl;dr: Does anyone have any idea how/if randoms win when most of them aren't good at the game?
