Decided to farm some platinum on Glacier/Cerberus, because I wanted some quick credits before finishing for the night. I am NOT a platinum player. I can competently play gold and, in rare cases, carry a gold match with 3 ****ty people, but I'm not a great player like plenty of the folks here.

There weren't a lot of public lobbies running that setup, so I settled for a team that included a Geth Engineer, an Asari Justicar, and a Quarian Male Engineer. The GE and QME are both capable of putting out the DPS that's useful (maybe necessary) in Platinum, but the AJA was puzzling, considering the team. The GE also threw on a Particle Rifle I, and the QME and AJA both had an Acolyte. The AJA put on almost no equipment, just a gear mod, and the QME mentioned that the missile glitch worked on the Particle Rifle in the lobby, so I should have just left. Knew he'd be lagging a lot, too, since he was British and the others in the lobby clearly weren't. I threw on a GI with the Piranha and Talon, Armor Piercing IV, a Cyclonic Modulator IV, Shotgun Rail Amp III, and Densified Ammunition V, since I knew we were all heading to that tiny room, and I knew that nobody there had the DPS to hold a small area.

About 25 minutes later, they all down after the objective on wave 10. I decided to finish it out, because all 3 were escort missions, and I sort of thought you might have to finish the wave for it to count towards the op. Used a missile on two banshees, TC+PM+Piranha'd the **** out of two Atlases, and pulled out the Talon to shoot the smaller ones in the head while the people told me how pointless it was on the mic. Actually died just as the Talon shot connected with the face of the last phantom, but it got me right back up, since the wave was over. Let myself die during extraction, because why the hell not?

The next screen has medals for 75 kills, 75 shotgun kills, 25 pistol kills, 20 headshots, and 15 revives. I had about 135k while the second best (QME) had 65k. Two of them had a 5 revives medal, which sort of pissed me off for whatever reason. The GE seemed to never throw the turret out for the sake of shield restoration, mostly fired the particle rifle straight up (WHY!?), and tried to heavy melee phantoms every time they showed up by holding the melee button rather than holding until the animation starts, releasing, and doing it again. QME mostly ran around trying to create TBs with arc grenades and incinerate, but for whatever reason, he never seemed to use them on banshees to get their barriers down. The AJA put the bubble in front of the door, but I never saw a biotic explosion, and half the time, it wasn't up at all. The match had taken 29 minutes. When we saw this, one of them mentioned that it was a "pretty good time for a Platinum run" even though the same camping strategy usually takes about 20 minutes.

The two with mics were constantly talking about how ****ty the GE was, but based on the way the match went, I could be pretty damned sure that they wouldn't have won if someone of their skill level was there instead of me.

Clearly, randoms go to Gold/Platinum lobbies for a reason, but it seems like 90% of the time that I'm not playing with people from this forum or other friends, I end up doing most of the work with kills, objectives, and revives.

I truly don't understand; how do these people succeed when competent players seem to be so damned rare? I can't see how matches go if I'm not in them, so I have no idea how the process works when all four are randoms. If there were a constant string of failures, there wouldn't be a huge benefit to bumping up the difficulty, so they can't just lose constantly, right? Is it just a matter of players here killing things faster, and they would have actually been fine, just taken longer? I know when I've played with Ashen Earth, he outscores me (and everyone else) by a huge margin, so maybe it is just something similar.

Sorry... this text wall is mostly just venting, because matches like this are frustrating, especially when two of the ****ty players that probably got carried are berating the other constantly.

tl;dr: Does anyone have any idea how/if randoms win when most of them aren't good at the game?

I play with randoms all the time, its all I play with. And I win 75-90% of my games.

Most randoms are dumb. I went into a Gold PUG and saw a N7 112 with a level 12 Vanguard (not the host) waiting to be carried with a Katana III and no gears or consumables. I promptly left.

The next lobby I went into was filled to the brim with N7 20 - N7 76 idiots doing U/U/P with a bunch of common/low level weapons. There was a N7 Demolisher (level 8) with a Predator VII, N7 Paladin (level 1) with a Widow I and a Asari Adept (level 12) with a Claymore I. I face palmed when they all hit ready and left in a hurry. Oh, and may I add, they have no gears nor consumables equipped...

So, nowadays, I play Gold and Platinum exclusively with friends only. Solves the problem of random idiots trying to ride on your tailcoats.

It's about 90% of what I play too, and I win most of the time as well. But both of us have maxed rares, and we both care enough about the game to come to these forums. Almost nobody here is an average (or worse) player. Do you generally feel like you have to carry the match, or do things mostly go alright regardless of what you do?

The AJ can be a solid debuffer for Platinum Glacier camping, so long as they keep that bubble up just outside the room.

But it doesn't sound like this AJ knew what they were doing. Sounds like these guys knew that those were good classes, but didn't really know what made them good classes.

Anyway, yes, sometimes its a wonder that some of the people that PUG ever manage to win Gold/Plat games based on their performances/loadouts.

What do ya mean wave 4? I joined a platinum farming PUG that sucked on wave 2... I had to carry those idiots who were too tight to use any consumables. No wonder I had a massive backache for the past few weeks...

My back might finally give way from carrying way too many Krogans (they weigh a ton) and Batarians...

People other than me play Krogan/Batarian characters on Platinum? I'm shocked.

And they're bad with them? I'm saddened.

I play almost only with randoms, and i can say that success rate on platinum is not less than gold, tho i didn't play plat too much.

P.S. When on platinum wave 1 you hear your teammate saying "Banshee?? On wave 1??" you know you picked up a wrong grop and will have a bad time.

Examples of pug mediocrity:
- Took FHE (considered unimpressive), finished first with 140k, second had 80k
- Took N7 destroyer (okay, with Harrier), first with 170k, second had 70k - ANOTHER DESTROYER

Yeah, but I KNOW you can carry on gold. We played together for a gold match or two, and I used the opportunity to try Drellguarding on Gold while you used a Piranha on a Vorcha to show me that it was, indeed, a good weapon on any class. I died constantly after wave 7, and the two randoms kinda sucked, so you carried substantially. I sort of wish I could spectate a match I'm not in to see what randoms do.

Haha. Perhaps for you it is. I'm 100% sure that I couldn't even pull my weight if I ended up in a game where camping wasn't the primary goal. In gold games where people camp, I generally wander off, but I know I couldn't survive outside of that tiny room on Glacier, except during objective rounds, when everyone else is right there, and people actually do missile at times.

I get top score just about every time, so I guess you could say I carry the team. But not with outrageous scores though.

I play PUG games exclusively and my success rate in gold games is nearly 100%. On rare days, I actually end up in a really good team. Yesterday for example, I played a game or four with a group where each player would end up with around 100,000 points each game. But most PUG players seem to do just fine.

I have only tried platinum five times or so and without co-ordination of some kind, I genuinely have no idea how a PUG group could succeed here. I've only gotten to round eight or so and decided it's just not for me. Even camping in that little room on the Glacier map did not work very well as Banshees would just teleport in and shout everything to death. No fun to be had on platinum for me.

If you want to try some non-camping Plat games hit me up. I do U/U/P runs with some people on my friends list and we have a near 100% completion record (our record isn't 100% because someone occasionally plays a non-krogan vanguard and ends up glitching out or we get horribly screwed in an objective wave, eg center hack on Goddess)

I can't even remember the last time I didn't complete the waves 10 objective in a Gold PUG. Must have been weeks ago. My extraction rate (any kind, not necessarily full) is definitely over 90%. And that's not because I'm such a great player, but because Gold PUGs (really randome ones, not farming setups) are extremely easy.

Moral of the story: If you don't get extraction in the overwhelming majority of your Gold Pugs, you must be an insanely poor player.

In Gold, you can generally win with random public groups if you are willing to commit to doing teamwork, get one other person that can pull their weight, and stick together. The vast majority of wipes start when someone runs off alone, dies, then the death lures everyone else to them.

Always know where your buddy is, and back them up. Don't run off to revive someone unless your buddy dose.

This means if you don't have a mic or people aren't talking that you will end up picking your buddy and backing them up without telling them that you are. That is fine, even if it means being the wingman you are both going to do better with someone to watch your back and twice the firepower on any given target.

This works as long as the person you team up with has even basic skills and awareness. Don't blindly follow them into a suicidal situation, but make sure they can get out of a tight spot if they get into one.

Also, the obvious stuff. Be ready to burn consumable equipment and know how to do a lot of damage and control your exposure to incoming fire. All else fails, take a close ranged class and play in Fire Base Glacier. Even indifferent teamwork can turn the tight hallways into a meatgrinder when you get electric slashes, vorcha flamethrowers and arc grenades covering those narrow choke points.

I aint gonna hop on my mic and waste my breath calling you noob during the game...im going to send you nasty messages letting you know how bad you were and how i had to carry you freaks... some call it playing solo with a audience....i call it a normal ME3MP session. Your welcome!!

as you spend those creds to get crap that we both know wont help you....remember who you leeched off of.

Platinum is more of a joke, really. Any hint of real teamwork is gone, it's just a pure DPS race to grind up the bosses as they waddle up in the conga line of every big bruser the game can handle on a map at one time. Rather then discourageing lone wolf behavior it enforces teamwork by more or less requireing a group to be in one area, shooting at one target. The most feared foe on Plat is especaly bad, as Banshees are pathatic when they aren't reducliously cheap.
