I've only ever used haks that went straight in my override then I converted them into a module specific hak later but I just downloaded rws's cliffs hak pack and it has an erf. I put the hak in the hak folder saved the mod but I can't see the cliffs.
Where do I put the erf ?
If it's to go in the hak file does it have to be associated with the mod too ?
Does it need to go in the hak when I make one for the mod or is it just so I can see it ?
Thank you..
Where does an erf go ?

an erf is just an encapsulated container which can be placed where you want. you have to import through file>import and it will create the needed blueprint for easy selection. after importing and saving it isn't needed anymore. the hak you put within your directory contains all the files to render the cliff and is therefore essential. you could also create your blueprint manually by cloning an existing one and change the appearance to the cliff model without the help of the erf.

That's true for normal erfs. However, 500 pound erfs can go anywhere they want to.

You can also extract the contents of an ERF with tools like nw2packer, and then just drop the files in your module or campaign folder. I usually do that so that I can select only the items I want, and don't clutter up my module or campaign folder with unnecessary things.

I prefer the 'import and see' approach. It's like a lucky dip - you never know what you'll get.
(Although occasionally it turns out to be a vomit-flavoured jelly bean).
