I enjoy both DA:O and DA2, however there is one thing that has bugged me about both games. And that is the fact that choosing your specialization seems to have little effect on the story or your companions opinions of you and the like.
Just as an example: How awesome would it be if people actually reacted to the fact that you are a blood mage/assassin/reaver. If those choices actually had some kind of effect on the game in some other way than just how you fight in combat.
One thing that I notice is that Bioware has implemented this specialization status into their companions very well, for example: Zevran is an Assassin, Morrigan a shapeshifter, Anders a healer, or Merrill a blood mage just to name a few. These specializations are woven into their very characters and I really enjoy that, however what I am hoping to see is some kind of similar treatment from companions regarding your own specialization.
Here's a list of some things I would like to see in this regard:
- Only one speciailization (the fact that you can have 2 is part of what makes it unspecial right now)
- Companions having opinions about your specialization
- Quests specifically oriented towards that specialization
- NPC's that react towards your specialization
- Specializations interwoven into the plot (there is so much that can be done with the player being a blood mage that I cannot even fathom how this hasn't been done before)
- Items specific to a certain specialization (For example, daggers that can only be used by Assassins. Not only does this help to improve the "special" feel, but it also adds replay value)
These are just a few off the top of my head. Anyone else agree? Disagree? have suggestions on this topic? Post them here.

I agree. Specializations should have more of a effect on story.

Thirded. They barely do anything.
Except for the "only one" part. Half the fun is combining them.

Pretty sure Mike or David said they were already going to do something like this.

The problem is exactly what you said about the companions--the specializations are woven into their characters. But with Hawke or the Warden you've got a dozen specializations, and you want unique situations for all of them? That won't happen. In any significant way, at least.

Maker, yes. Specializations don't have to have a giant impact on the story, but I'd like someone to acknowledge my blood mages for once.
A specific quest for each specialization would be awesome. I really liked having class-based strongholds in BG 2.
