They all developed from the likes of Ultima and Wizardry anyways.

LOL. I actually only started hearing the term "JRPG" frequently in recent years - for a long time, "JRPGs" were simply RPGs. Then one day, some "western" RPGs came out and became really popular, and somehow retroactively turned what used to be simply called RPGs into a separate genre, so as not to be confused with "true" RPGs. As someone who has played numerous "JRPGs" in his time, it's been quite amusing to watch.
Meh makes me just want to take a shotgun to there knee caps really.

I suppose the big reason for the vitriol is that old Western RPGs, like Ultima, Wizardry or Arena, tried their best to emulate PnP experiences as best as they could with their limits of technology. As the tech advanced, western RPGs made steps to move more towards this experience. JRPGs, on the other hand, have roughly the exact same mechanics as what we saw ten or fifteen years ago in JRPGs, with flashier cinematics and animation.
Back in the 80's and 90's, JRPGs were inspired by Western RPGs, while WRPGs are inspired by tabletops. So once the technology allowed them to accomplish more, they stayed stagnant in gameplay, instead heralding to be interactive stories.
Because they have very different roots and influences, I feel like they have migrated out of the realm of Role Playing Games (despite wearing the monicker of RPGs for so long).
Not knocking JRPGs and not saying every RPG coming out of Japan (or Asia) meets these characteristics (or every stat-based, dialogue using video game comit out of North America and Europe meet the characteristics of what I outlined as WRPGs) but it has been the trend of the genre.
I could go on, but I feel this line of logic will fall on deaf ears.

IGN sucks with top 100s. They put Charizard at rank 1, but Chandelure didn't even make 100.

Very surprising!
Which of these three titles might be a better overall game is a much more subjective question, but if asked which of these is the stronger role playing game, clearly it is Fallout New Vegas.

I can't help but think those who label FFVII as one of the greatest games/RPGs/whatever have never actually played it. It's really only an ok game at best. FFVI had a better cast and FFV had better combat.Ghost Lightning wrote...
These ought to be in the top 10 I think: FFVII, Chrono Trigger, KoTOR.
Also it's aged terribly.

This.
I hated FFVII quite a bit. To be honest, it is the worst FF game I have played.
Also KOTOR 2 should be there instead of KOTOR. It may have been unfinished, but it is still much better.

I have played it, but I agree that it has aged terribly. With its visuals and camera it's nearly unplayable. But the story is still tops.

I've never gotten the huge appeal of VII. I enjoyed IV, VI, VIII, IX, and X all much more. I think people just like VII mainly because of Sephiroth.

I'm going to lmao if pokemon black beats the mass effect series. I don't think that's going to happen but that would be pretty awesome.
I would put Pokemon(pretty much any version) above the entire ME series.

Pokemon Red/Blue actually might be pretty high up there just based on the colossal impact it made at the time.

Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, was a downright groundbreaking title - it had a lot of the features people cherish in their precious "WRPGs" such as a multi-branching storyline, dynamic character development, tons of side quests, multiple endings, and even a "New Game +" mode.
It also swept the turn-based random battle system to the side in favor of real time encounters with enemies and fluid real time/turn-based hybrid combat, and featured a highly unique time traveling mechanic.
Really, it pretty much broke every convention there was at the time and is one of the most innovative and celebrated titles of that era - all from one of those hokey Japanese developers who make the same fake RPGs over and over.
If it's not in the top ten, that whole list is null and void (not that it already wasn't).

I always preferred yellow. There was just something to being able to get all three starter pokemon in one game. With Yellow, you were essentially reliving the events of the cartoon, which was alot of fun at the time.

Yeah, Yellow was probably my favorite. Either Yellow or Gold/Silver. Very close call.

Yep, another joke list. Diablo III being so close to New Vegas on the list just shows me I am not going to agree with the rest of the list either.
Another else thinking they shouldn't even list JRPGs and wester RPGs on the same list? They are very different genres to me.
I agree... I probably wouldn't consider most 'JRPGs' to be RPGs even. I bet IGN's just going to put some games in their top ten that don't even permit roleplaying.

I'm actually surprised at the rather low ranking of Witcher 2, given the hype surrounding it.
Why? It's IGN. This is actually a "Top games by Publishers who advertise with us" list.
I'll guarantee that top 10 will include: ME 1-3, Dragon Age Origins, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. (Most of which aren't actually RPG's)
Whereas if you talk to gamers, the list would be more like (In no specific order): Ultima 4, Ultima 7, Final Fantasy 7, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, Fallout 1 & 2, Diablo 2, KotOR, and Morrowind.
I'll be really surprised if they even mention: Telengard, Nethack, The Bard's Tale 1-3, Phantasie, Dungeon Master, or Wizardry. They may even try to leave out the Gold Box games and the Might & Magic series.
I mean, lets be serious, this list is probably being compiled by a 20 year old who has never played a PnP RPG, and likely never touched anything older than a Playstation game.
