Why? It's IGN. This is actually a "Top games by Publishers who advertise with us" list.
I'll guarantee that top 10 will include: ME 1-3, Dragon Age Origins, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. (Most of which aren't actually RPG's)
Whereas if you talk to gamers, the list would be more like (In no specific order): Ultima 4, Ultima 7, Final Fantasy 7, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, Fallout 1 & 2, Diablo 2, KotOR, and Morrowind.
Personally? Of all the games you listed as top candidates, only Planescape, KotOR, and Morrowind would make my cut (haven't played Ultima).
You're already assuming that there is a clear consensus on what constitutes "the best" RPG. Your own perspective on RPGs is already in stark contrast to mine, judging by your assessment of Bioware/Bethesda games. Hell, there have already been people here arguing over the candidacy of Final Fantasy VII. Regardless of whether or not Ign is paid off, I doubt I'd find your top RPGs list much more appealing.
I guess I'm going to have to bold and underline the operative words there. Seems a few people missed those.
As far as my assessment of Bioware/Bethesda goes, we've been down this road before. Defined character seperate from the Players skill, for decades that's been the factor that's seperated RPG from Adventure games.
So...if I disagree with your assessment, I'm not a gamer? Or if those aren't my favorite games in the whole wide world, I'm not a gamer? I'm not sure I understand who this "gamers" group is that you're referring to.
I do consider myself a gamer, and of the ones you listed above, I have played exactly 0 of them.
Please note the words I bolded and underlined above. In the future, I'd appriciate you not trying to strawman.
He simply implies that he'd suspect a poll amongst gamers to have such results. He's most probably basing this on his assessment of the objective-like relevance or importance of these games to people who have played most to all RPGs. I don't think his list of personal preference would be exactly like that.
I suspect he could right when it comes to people who have played most rpg's and were born in the 80's til mid 90's.
Actually, my personal list would be much different. I did post what I've noted to be the most commonly agreed upon titles across myriad boards. In fact, I did originally have Chronotrigger in there, but that added up to 11.
My personal list would be...
Fallout 2
Fallout
Baldur's Gate 2
Planescape
Ultima 4
Might & Magic 7
The Bard's Tale 2
Pool of Radiance
The Witcher
Dragon Age Origins
Sadly, the quality of RPG's has dropped substantially in the last 10 years. It's a real shame that technology has progressed by leaps and bounds over the last 10 years, and Fallout/Fallout 2 still have yet to even be equaled in their features, much less approached.
