Might & Magic games were action/adventure kind of RPGs since their first appearance till 8th and even 9th installment; not like Fallout, Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment.
My experiment on M&M 8 and 7 shows that they take much time to be completed (over 80 hours). The point is if you don't get strong enough you can't fight through the dozens of strong enemies in every Area. Both have good stories (not great) and their RPG elements aren't few.
9th game is a good game, but you can feel that it's rushed and you may be disappointed..

You should try Ultima(start with either Ultima 4 or Ultima 7) and/or Wasteland. They are very different games from Might and Magic, and even those released in the last 10-15 years. Although they can still be very repetitive.

Rather surprised that Front Mission 3 (#75) and The Bard's Tale (#71) scored as low as they did - but, with hundreds of thousands of games over the years, I'm glad to see they at least made the cut.

I have to wonder if Zork is going to wind up in the Top Ten...

^ I see. I guess I'll never be a real gamer, then, because I'm too much of a graphics snob to go that far back. Image IPB

In my day, we didn't have any of your fancy graphics!

We played Zork, and we imagined the graphics!

Get off my lawn!

Whereas if you talk to gamers,  the list would be more like (In no specific order):  Ultima 4,  Ultima 7,  Final Fantasy 7,  Baldur's Gate 2,  Planescape Torment,  Fallout 1 & 2,  Diablo 2,  KotOR,  and Morrowind.

So...if I disagree with your assessment, I'm not a gamer? Or if those aren't my favorite games in the whole wide world, I'm not a gamer? I'm not sure I understand who this "gamers" group is that you're referring to.

I do consider myself a gamer, and of the ones you listed above, I have played exactly 0 of them. Image IPB

He simply implies that he'd suspect a poll amongst gamers to have such results. He's most probably basing this on his assessment of the objective-like relevance or importance of these games to people who have played most to all RPGs. I don't think his list of personal preference would be exactly like that.

I suspect he could right when it comes to people who have played most rpg's and were born in the 80's til mid 90's.

On the bright side, I see Golden Sun clocking in at #50. I had alot of fun with that series.

On the other hand, unless they're not part of the list, it looks like both ME1 and ME3 will beat out ME2.

Pool of Radiance made it fairly high, I'm happy.
New Vegas got some love, and Bard's Tale made it an okay distance.

So... Mass Effect 2 got ranked #57. TBH, I doubt this list will make sense in the coming days. For one thing, Fallout: New Vegas is better than every game that ranked higher so far (including ME2 in IMO).

You see, this is precisely why the RPG genre is as of yet undefined. It's thanks to places like ****ing IGN that stick Mario Kart in their "Top 100 RPGs" list. Then of course they make 80% of the top picks JRPGs, which are nothing more than Eastern Adventure games.

Why?  It's IGN.  This is actually a "Top games by Publishers who advertise with us" list.

I'll guarantee that top 10 will include:  ME 1-3,  Dragon Age Origins,  Oblivion,  Fallout 3,  and Skyrim. (Most of which aren't actually RPG's)

Personally? Of all the games you listed as top candidates, only Planescape, KotOR, and Morrowind would make my cut (haven't played Ultima).

You're already assuming that there is a clear consensus on what constitutes "the best" RPG. Your own perspective on RPGs is already in stark contrast to mine, judging by your assessment of Bioware/Bethesda games. Hell, there have already been people here arguing over the candidacy of Final Fantasy VII. Regardless of whether or not Ign is paid off, I doubt I'd find your top RPGs list much more appealing.

I guess I'm going to have to bold and underline the operative words there.  Seems a few people missed those.

As far as my assessment of Bioware/Bethesda goes,  we've been down this road before.  Defined character seperate from the Players skill,  for decades that's been the factor that's seperated RPG from Adventure games.

Image IPB

Please note the words I bolded and underlined above.  In the future,  I'd appriciate you not trying to strawman.

Actually,  my personal list would be much different.  I did post what I've noted to be the most commonly agreed upon titles across myriad boards.  In fact,  I did originally have Chronotrigger in there,  but that added up to 11.

My personal list would be...

Fallout 2
Fallout
Baldur's Gate 2
Planescape
Ultima 4
Might & Magic 7
The Bard's Tale 2
Pool of Radiance
The Witcher
Dragon Age Origins

Sadly,  the quality of RPG's has dropped substantially in the last 10 years.  It's a real shame that technology has progressed by leaps and bounds over the last 10 years,  and Fallout/Fallout 2 still have yet to even be equaled in their features,  much less approached.

Of course this is just my opinion, but.....really? ME2 higher up on the list than TW2? and NWN2 should at least be in the top20 which it isn't (it would be in my top10, tbh). So far, this list is everything I expected it to be.

New Vegas has the most lazy ending yet effected in any medium, though I would've ranked it higher, mainly because I haven't heard of, let alone played, most of the games on this list.

I don't get the IGN-bashing over articles like this though; surely it's a matter of opinion, and IGN are under no obligation to respect opinions from people who were not consulted. Conviction is surely a virtue, a lack of it is weak at best and dangerous at worst. IGN have written crappy articles in the past, but I wouldn't say this is one of them. That said, I have a very limited knowledge of the games on this list anyway, so maybe I'm missing something.

I think it obvious that Call of Duty will be number one on the list, even Bioware has said its an rpg.

All well and good, except when you attempt to suddenly stretch the definition of RPG to the point where you specifically exclude games you dislike. Perfect examples? Your bizarre assessments of Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, etc. Games which in the past you have claimed are not RPGs, yet all also rely on character skill via attributes, perks, etc. On the other hand, you've had no problem ignoring the player skill involved in games like Mass Effect 1 including aiming mechanisms, sprinting, cover mechanics, and grenades or the Witcher which makes use of a real time battle system. Essentially, you refuse to abide by your own definitions except when they suit you.

Edit: And it seems I was right regarding the top RPGs list. Despite bias from Ign, I really don't consider your list any more appealing.

Ha, yeah, they have Mass Effect 2 higher than New Vegas and The Witcher 2. Then again, its an IGN list.

Phantasy Star made the list! I loved that game -- it had a female protagonist. Not much of a story, but still it was a lot of fun. I spent several hundred hours on that game. Now I need to see if Star Control 2 made the list. I'm such a middle-aged nerd!

Edit: Oh, and I remember it cost $70 back in the 80s.  I think games nowadays are actually very cheap.  RPGs back in the 80s for the consoles always cost between $70 - $90.  Games for computers were cheaper, more in the $30 - $50 range.

If IGN is going to claim themselves as an authority, people are right to hold them to a higher standard than just some random dude making a list.

New Vagas at #89?  TW2 at #78?  I personally think both of those games are overrated but those are ridiculously low considering the reception they have received.
