I honestly think it's ridiculous to compare old console and CRPG's to modern AAA games. People forget how much the technology and in some cases the talent have evolved.
In just the past year, conversations on this forum have inspired me to pick back up Fallout 2, Arcanum, Alpha Centauri and Ultima 7 (just fired it up last night). I've probably played more games that came out before the year 2000 this year than Inhave games that came out after 2010.
And you know what? They all stood the test of time. Great interfaces, super story pacing, solid progression and graphics that are like watching a black and white film - something you don't even notice after two minutes. Yes, there were games that were terrible in the past. That doesn't negate the good games of the past any more than the bad games today negate the good ones today. And many of the old games had feature, elements and options games today can't match, despite not having outdated technology.
The gaming industry became the giant industry it is today because us old fogies have been buying the same games as the young whipper snappers. When a game tries to cater too much to one or the other, it doesn't succeed nearly as well as the games that can reach both. I think games like Skyrim and DA:O were able to cross that divide (and their sales reflected it). This list, while questionable in its rankings, does a good job of capturing titles that any fan of RPGs could like. For the old school purists, there are the Ultima and Pool of Radiance shout outs. For the hardcore JRPG types, there are titles for the Asian only market (a few too many, in my taste, but that's besides the point). For the PC only crowd, there were games and for the console only, there were others.
I think the list might have been receive better if it was titled '100 Games every RPG FAn Should Play.' Beause comparing Mario RPG to New Vegas is the most bizarre task I can imagine doing.
