NWN - Stunning graphics?  I was HYPED for that game when it came out, and tried for years to love it (failing in the end.)  But stunning?  The very-poor 3D graphics turned me off AT THE TIME.  Stunning?  To whom?

Same here. Going from the very nice looking Infinity engine look of BG to the chunky NWN look was one of the main reasons I never got into NWN. I thought it looked pretty bad at the the time it was released.

Hahaha...well, didn't IGN give Jade Empire a 9.9 score or something ridiculous?

I definitely prefer Morrowind to Oblivion, if only because I like the darker tone of the game and its storyline, and Vvardenfell being a far more interesting place than Cyrodiil.

Also, cut the fogeyism out, bussin - I'm tired of hearing the "well back in my day..." nonsense.

Yeah, just the entire tone around the Battle of Red Mountain was epic, with all the different interpretations around what happened to Nerevar. Aside from Martin Septim, there was very little about Oblivion's storyline to interest me.

I can't help it if RPGs transformed into hiking/LARPing/dating sims with AWESOME ACTION GAMEPLAY.

That's too bad for you, then. All of us youngsters will continue to enjoy the amazing games that have come out since "back in your day" while you continue to fawn over the "classics."

I don't get this ‘hiking' simulation comparison. Many games have you walking around for miles through difficult terrain.

And while I had no personal problems with Oblivion, the praise that game is given... *shudder*

Hey, but that's what these lists are for - letting us whine about them!:P

For the record, I never did enjoy nor get into Morrowind.  That remains my least favorite TES game (unless we are counting Battlespire.)

You should try it with Morrowind Overhaul. It's the best customizable complete modding package there is, to any game, in my opinion.

Anyway, about Jade Empire - I suspect Bioware/EA to bring that to life soon enough, so the inclusion is logical (if my suspicion holds).

I swear, if Fallout 3 is higher on the list than New Vegas...

Please ellaborate:  I am playing Fallout 3 for the first time and am surprisingly loving it.  I guess I am tired of the played out human-dwarf-elf scenario plagueging RPGs.  It really is a fun game to just creep around in the wasteland.  I've heard New Vegas is just a rinse and repeat of Fallout 3, but without the neat historic landmarks as are in the D.C.-setting.

Yep, look like Skyrim is a top 5 choice here. Also... Deus Ex... only 25... I'm gonna smack someone.

Fallout 3 is leagues ahead of New Vegas. The atmosphere was better. New Vegas is just a really big desert and it got boring after a while. The story and characters were also a lot better. I actually liked Amota and that one girl from the vault survival guide.

It's never amazed me the "fogies" are unwilling to admit the sheer amount of crap the accompanied the few legitimate classics from their time and the "youngsters" who are unwilling to admit that there are few legitimate classics from their time that is surrounded by a sheer amount of crap.

Disagree. New Vegas is a vast improvement over Fallout 3.

Well there is a lot of crap surrounding the amazing games that have come out since "the good ol' days" - it's more readily apparent because the recent crap is still fresh in our minds, and all of the crap from back then has faded into obscurity. That, of course, makes the "classics" look more appealing and colors one's view of how things were "back then" compared to now.

I honestly think it's ridiculous to compare old console and CRPG's to modern AAA games. People forget how much the technology and in some cases the talent have evolved.

I'd call New Vegas a cross between the best of Fallout 2 and Fallout 3. For the most part. It'd be my favorite Fallout if it weren't for the non-stop crashing.

Fallout: New Vegas does take place in the Mojave Desert. Other than that, it's far, far less of a wasteland than Fallout 3. Basically all of DC is still a ruin, while New Vegas has visibly been in reconstruction for a long time. Not that that's inherently a bad thing, as I enjoyed Fallout 3.

Her name is spelled Amata. You sure you liked her as much as you claim? I tease.

Also, the characters are very strong in New Vegas if you were to ask me. But that'd be a bit of a long discussion, and imo, the characters in the DLC add-ons are WAY better than what you can find in Fallout 3.

In just the past year, conversations on this forum have inspired me to pick back up Fallout 2, Arcanum, Alpha Centauri and Ultima 7 (just fired it up last night). I've probably played more games that came out before the year 2000 this year than Inhave games that came out after 2010.

And you know what? They all stood the test of time. Great interfaces, super story pacing, solid progression and graphics that are like watching a black and white film - something you don't even notice after two minutes. Yes, there were games that were terrible in the past. That doesn't negate the good games of the past any more than the bad games today negate the good ones today. And many of the old games had feature, elements and options games today can't match, despite not having outdated technology.

The gaming industry became the giant industry it is today because us old fogies have been buying the same games as the young whipper snappers. When a game tries to cater too much to one or the other, it doesn't succeed nearly as well as the games that can reach both. I think games like Skyrim and DA:O were able to cross that divide (and their sales reflected it). This list, while questionable in its rankings, does a good job of capturing titles that any fan of RPGs could like. For the old school purists, there are the Ultima and Pool of Radiance shout outs. For the hardcore JRPG types, there are titles for the Asian only market (a few too many, in my taste, but that's besides the point). For the PC only crowd, there were games and for the console only, there were others.

I think the list might have been receive better if it was titled '100 Games every RPG FAn Should Play.' Beause comparing Mario RPG to New Vegas is the most bizarre task I can imagine doing.

If I were to review those games today (and I'll skip Arcanum, because I somehow never played that one), I don't see many negatives at all.  Fallout 2 could use better documentation for its mechanics.  Ultima VII uses an unnecessarily difficult to read font for its dialogue.  And Alpha Centauri doesn't have any flaws I can see (it's just about the perfect game).

I wouldn't say it crashes non-stop. At least on PC I don't get crashes at all.

Except in OWB. I think too much just happens in a very small area and the game engine can't handle it somehow.

I'm a PC player as well. I had hundreds of crashes over the three times I played the game. I've tried to load it up and play it several times since the beginning of this year, but I always run into the crashing problem. I wish I was as fortunate as most others playing the game, because I enjoyed it almost as much as KotOR.

Funny enough, I didn't get anywhere near as many crashes in the DLCs as the base game.

I actually thought that gave it a bit character. ^_^
