I swear, if Fallout 3 is higher on the list than New Vegas...

Please ellaborate:  I am playing Fallout 3 for the first time and am surprisingly loving it.  I guess I am tired of the played out human-dwarf-elf scenario plagueging RPGs.  It really is a fun game to just creep around in the wasteland.  I've heard New Vegas is just a rinse and repeat of Fallout 3, but without the neat historic landmarks as are in the D.C.-setting.

Fallout 1 and 2 purists will say 3 is the worst game ever made but praise New Vegas simply because it has somewhat better written dialog....
Its really apples vs oranges here.  I love both games but the difference is minimal.  3 has the better atmosphere while Vegas took 3 and improved on it in other areas.  3 feels like an open world wasteland (which I was led to believe was the whole point of the Fallout games) while NV is a very well written (albeit pretty linear) romp in the mojave.
The DLC is a mixed bag.  Loved Pitt, and especially Point Lookout...
While NV's DLC has ok to amazing.... Loved Dead Money but think Old World Blues is easily the best Fallout content to come out in ever.

I'd call New Vegas a cross between the best of Fallout 2 and Fallout 3. For the most part. It'd be my favorite Fallout if it weren't for the non-stop crashing.

I wouldn't say it crashes non-stop. At least on PC I don't get crashes at all.

Except in OWB. I think too much just happens in a very small area and the game engine can't handle it somehow.

I'm a PC player as well. I had hundreds of crashes over the three times I played the game. I've tried to load it up and play it several times since the beginning of this year, but I always run into the crashing problem. I wish I was as fortunate as most others playing the game, because I enjoyed it almost as much as KotOR.

Funny enough, I didn't get anywhere near as many crashes in the DLCs as the base game.

Sounds like my troubles with Skyrim right now lol.
It literally shuts down my computer 30 minutes into playing... You can seriously set your clock to it.
It seems if I save and quit around 25 minutes and then go back in I can play for another 30 minutes without worrying about it... But its not fun having to watch the clock all the time to make sure my computer doesnt shuts down just for playing a game.....:pinched:

I'm actually surprised at the rather low ranking of Witcher 2, given the hype surrounding it.

Why?  It's IGN.  This is actually a "Top games by Publishers who advertise with us" list.

I was getting that impression.

I had that same experience with Fallout 3.  Turned out it was a hardware problem (my GPU was dying).

Jozape: I believe you. Bad luck I guess. I don't know why, but it just runs smoothly here. One of my favorite games.

I like FO3 too, by the way. Just not nearly as much.

Well, a) I don't say FO3 is the worst game ever - it's actually quite good, just not up to par with the first two, and B) F:NV is better because it feels more like an actual Fallout game. It continues the storylines of the FO1 and FO2 and deepens and expands the adaptation of the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system for the Gamebryo engine. I have no idea what you mean by linear, both games are very open. And importantly, its storyline isn't an abortion of lore and a mere mash-up of the plots of previous games like FO3's is.

A post-apocalyptic game isn't lesser just because you can't ooh and aah for ten seconds over the skeleton of the Washington Monument or some other (partially-)destroyed famous landmark. That's never what Fallout's been about.

EDIT:  Also, speaking of older RPGs, now that KotOR II is out on Steam I'd suggest getting it and downloading the TSL Restored Content Mod. That's been my time-killer for the past couple of weeks. Really does do a great job of reimplementing most of what was lost through executive meddling. The ending is still just as abrupt as ever, but Malachor does have a good deal more content than it did, and the HK Factory is back too.

I don't think New Vegas is an ugly game either. Sure there's a lot of desert, but it's a huge game. There's also a lot of other things. The Strip is still there if you like shiny, and there are plenty of small settlements, factories, caves, you name it. With the DLC you get some neat new landscapes as well.

It's not like FO3 had a more varied landscape anyway. Ruins... and ehm... More ruins. I loved the atmosphere in the DC wasteland though.

Very unhappy that Oblivion came in higher than BG1, Deus Ex, Morrowind and my favourite Fallouts (ie 1, 2 and NV). Also, Jade Empire was a surprise - I mean, I loved that game to bits but NOT a better CRPG than something like Icewind Dale II, imo :/ That game was incredible in terms of character customisation and some damned good fights.

Also, if Torment isn't at least placed top three (preferably top), then IGN is even worse than I thought.

Still hoping to see Arcanum, Daggerfall (unlikely), Mask of the Betrayer and Alpha Protocol (HIGHLY unlikely :P) on that there list.

Games that should be there but will probably not be: Bloodlines, Alpha Protocol, Arcanum. Hmm, what else...

And yes shame about Oblivion. I am not convinced it deserves to be in the top 100. I don't hate it, but it was the worst in the series IMO.

Only good thing about that list: Fable 2 beating Diablo 3.

Err... amazing games? Like in, RPGs? This is a pretty poor time for RPGs tbh.

Skyrim came out. I consider that an amazing game. I'm sure the resident negative nancies in this forum will try and pass off their disagreement with that assessment of as fact, but it changes nothing.

Outside of that, I think we're not seeing eye to eye on the time frame I'm giving, here - I'm talking about the days since those hoary old CRPGs that people like bussinrounds prop up as being the pinnacle of RPG perfection. Really, not everything has to be based on that outdated pen-and-paper crap in order to be a "good" RPG.

Thats what people keep telling me but how am I playing more demanding games like Batman Arkham City without any problems?  Plus it was doing the crashes before but when I came back to Skyrim I went 6 to 8 hour sessions without any problems.

Mass Effect yes; but tragically Deus Ex has already been listed (25 I think). Unless you mean HR in which case probably. It's a great game, but not as good as the original (in my opinion, obviously).

Define "more demanding".

It could be that some specific aspect of one game's design places stress of a particularly weak part of your hardware.

Plus it was doing the crashes before but when I came back to Skyrim I went 6 to 8 hour sessions without any problems.

I did the same.

I'm not saying you have a hardware problem.  I'm saying that hardware problems can manifest in this way.

I don't know what it is, but I'll say this: I have never been in doubt about whether a graphics card is truly broken or not. Usually when they break, it doesn't just manifest itself in a single game. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I've never heard of it happening or seen it myself, and I am assuming it's extremely rare that only one game triggers the issue out of many.

You know, I make no bones about my nearly unconditional love for New Vegas, but I really liked FO3 too, since it was the first truly open world game I ever attempted.  I still remember coming out of Vault 101, getting blinded, and then wondering what in the hell I had gotten myself into and what the hell do I do now?

The other thing I really liked about FO3, and i might be alone on this one, was the Metro. Being lost down there for hours and trying to make sense of it all, while getting hammered by some a-hole or mutated abomnination at every turn, on my first playthrough was actually a highlight for me.  I almost wish I could memory flush it, and do it that way all over again.  And, I suppose, unlike some, I liked all the DLC as well, yes, that includes Mothership Zeta!

Having said that, my favorite game has to be New Vegas.  The dramatic expansion and improvement in crafting with appropriate perks; the introduction of reloading with appropriate perks; the sheer volume of different weapons and weapon mods that satisfies that inner gun nut; factioning; all around better story; the sick amount of different items in the world that can actually be used to make something you'll actually use; and a stellar offering of quality DLCs (Old World Blues--better than most AAA games I've played), makes it my favorite.  New Vegas was a prime example of the way to do iterative improvement, even if a bit buggy.  And frankly, they raised the bar so high on DLC ouput, that I look at Bioware's offerings and can't really take them serious (no offense intended, I just see a few story elements having little to no value compared to the content available in something like OWB, but for those who are 'really into' ME they would see it differently I suppose).

New Vegas just rocks in every way.

That's fair.  I have a history of misidentifying hardware problems.  I once replaced a HDD because I thought it was failing, but I really just had some bad RAM.  And when my video card failed, it was behaving so irregularly that I thought my Power Supply was dying (and then the BIOS lied to me about the voltages).  Also, the video card was failing in a way entirely unlike how my other video card had failed 10 months earlier.

Its possible my card is going bad but I can't shake the feeling its just a weird PC setup (One of the dangers of building custom) My PC can handle Skyrim at high settings at least but I've settled for medium or low because I just don't want to deal with it. And forget mods I'm not touching them until I get this stabalized. As someone who had almost no problems with Fallout 3 and New Vegas I just cant help but feel that finally its my turn to suffer Bathesda's bugginess.

I am glad they gave No.1 to FF6. So tired of people worshipping FF7 which is clearly a inferior game.

edit: I quickly went through the list again and found that DAO and the witcher 1 were not even ranked. Really IGN? hate these two games that much?

Chrono Trigger at #2. Though some would put CT ahead of FF VI, they are both such memorable experiences. Sigh, Square how far you have fallen...
