I'm not sure exactly how companion gear is going to be managed in the next game (because I'm not on these boards all the time), but if it is going back to full control for the next game please make it optional. One of the dullest things I found with both dragon age games (even the dumbed down version in DA2) was having to swap gear around all the time. I didn't mind doing it in the baldurs gate games where nice magical items were harder to come by (and they were slower paced, also), but magic items are so abundant in these games it becomes a real chore.

What I'm suggesting is an *option* where companion gear is automatically upgraded to be par for their level and no more. If you choose to manage it yourself you can ensure that their stuff is the best all the time.

Thoughts?

Edit: I'd just like to add that I don't mind handling my own character's inventory, but all of the party members aswell I find too much.

Like an auto-level system?

The problem with that is that to do that it would be actually taking items from your inventory, to update their armor you know. And you might have wanted those items--but suddenly they're disappearing.

One way to do it I suppose would be to have an outfit like Bianca--auto-updating, something you can't get rid of, that the game automatically gives them when you toggle it.

Yeah, I mean that as your companions level up it just increases the stats.

I completely agree, simply because I don't see a reason there shouldn't be an "I don't care" mode. If you want the game to be super easy and uncomplicated that should be up to you. If you want the game to be complex and challenging that should also be up to the player.

Auto-level, auto-equip buttons seem fine to me. Let someone go off and play the game on easy. Meanwhile let others set the game onto some sort of "hardcore" difficulty setting and let them do what they want as well. It's more work, certainly. But it would seem to me worth the tradeoff.

For as much as people complained over the simplification of companions' gear in DA2, I didn't think they did enough. Remembering to swap out gear every 30 minutes for a party of 4 (more if you switch party members regularly) is tedious, and you still have to do that with weapons, rings, etc. in DA2. I'm not saying that you shouldn't be allowed to fiddle with that stuff if you want to, but as it is, I would love to have an "auto-level" option for the gear.

How about a "book / story" mode where you don't have to battle, loot or switch gear ?

Limited or auto customization? Exactly what I do not want but for those that do, I agree with Renmiri1, maybe a 'story' mode ala ME3 would suffice?

edit to add - I suppose I am curious what you mean by 'auto-level up' since I do not believe the companion armors got better except through adding runes in DA2? Same with weapons, they didn't level up but you could get better different weapons. Are you saying you want the companion armors/weopons to actually level up with the character?
I hope that question made sense

Customization is one of the staples that I expect in an RPG, but of course, what one expects and what others expect can differ greatly. :)

So, the companions should have costum armour that levels up with them?

I like the idea, but I still want the option to switch out the companions' armour. I like companions having custom armour and I like the idea of the armour either auto-upgrading, or finding armour upgrades thoughout the game, but I don't like being forced to keep the companions in one outfit though the entire playthrough and every game after. It gets very old seeing the same people in the same outfit over and over and over and over again...

I think a nice compromise would be to have companion custom armour and/or weapons that scale up with the owner for people who don't want to switch out gear, but still have the option to switch out gear for people who do. (Unless there's a specific in-game reason for companions to hold onto their stuff, like Varric and Bianca.) Boom. Everyone's happy.

In other words, "Lrn 2 play lol."

I can't see how you made the connection that if you don't like switching gear every 10 mins you can't play the game.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. For all of their gear. Like Varric's Crossbow.

Also, I'm stressing the word *option*

I just find it so tedious having to maintain them all the time.

Wow, I like this board better than the ME boards - suggest something like this over there and the people go ape-sh*t while misinterpreting your idea.

On topic, I think that would be a nice feature. I, for one, would not use it for I like managing items, but it would be a good option none the less.

I also agree that the "updating" of companion gear and stuffs got tedious and was unfortunately very frequent.

It wasn't my intention. I just thought a story mode would help

*scratches head*

I get a lot of enjoyment out of customizing my companion's gear, stats & builds. There are a lot of other games out there that don't have you manage a party. Certainly wouldn't want anything like this in the game by default. Maybe on super easy mode as long as it doesn't take resources away from other more important things.

For anyone who really dislikes managing gear, I wouldn't mind if disabling it was an option. Emphasis on the option.

I did not like the way DA2 did the gear at all. It was so simplified and looked all the same that it was boring. So managing it was also boring, and if there was an option to just auto-level everything related to gear in DA2 I probably would have done it so I didn't have to look at the generic icons. Add to that collecting all those similar icons and only being able to add them to Hawke was frustrating. So if the system is going to be like DA2, then yes please give an option to auto upgrade.

However, I loved the gear management system in DA:O. It was a perfect balance for me. I spent so many fun hours (yes hours and yes fun) managing my companions gear, and deciding what I wanted them to wear and when. In DA:O it was very nicely detailed, had a variety of icons, little stories and descriptions to many of them, with lots of choices, so I loved it. I could swap out a nature resistance gear with a frost one depending upon what I was battling. So not only was it nice to customize your companions but it also touched on tactics. It even added to my role playing experience because my Warden liked to save certain weapons and rings up at Soldier's Peak. Gear management in DA:O was what you made of it I suppose, but the way it was organized, drawn and written allowed for that rpg creativity and tactical planning.

Sound interesting.. can the game be finished by neither turning on the computer or any other gaming devices? I want!

Wait!!!!!!.. can the game get "my type ending" by just using my imagination and call it Art?  If not.. then keep it I already can see it sux.

Customization is one of the staples that I expect in an RPG, but of course, what one expects and what others expect can differ greatly. :)

Armor rating is level dependent. For example the armor Carver uses is called the Fereldan Men-at-Arms the base value of the armor at level 6 is 137. Carver can equip the Fereldan Girded Plating rune that adds 10% of the base value to the base value. Carver at level 6 with the rune attached would have the base value of 137 plus 10% extra (rounded to 14) from the rune total would be 151.

As Carver or any companion gains levels the base armor rating inceases. Otherwise it would be impossible for Aveline to go from 197 at level 6 to over 600 by Act 3.

The same with Fenris. His runes only add attack and allow the player to equip three different runes on his armor, but yet the armor rating increases throughout the game.

Bioware has used auto level for both weapons and armor before. Henchmen in Neverwinter Nights automatically upgraded their armor and weapons. The attributes of the henchmen also automatically upgraded. Putting in the option to do so would not be difficult.

At the start of every game an option screen could appear and the gamer can tailor some of the game mechanics to their liking.

Have a check box that says Auto upgrade weapons and armor for companions.
Have another box that says Auto Upgrade Attributes.

If the gamer wishes to turn on or off the option they go to the option menu and change it.
Having more options can be a good idea. If some wants to play in story mode let that be an option.
