Opinions on the Piranha

Good weapon, though I will say that it is a tad bit underweight. For whatever reason I always found it funny that the Reeger was heavier. It just seems like it would be one of the heavier shotguns to me due to its appearance. Maybe that's just me though.
To add note, I solo'd with a krogard with this shotgun for this past operation. While up close and personal it could take out geth nicely, it suffered quite horribly at even medium range - this is with a fully evolved choke. It definitely made me wish I brought an AR with me for those primes at range. It's a great shotgun, but its drawback is enough to keep a fair balance. Risk and reward type deal. Again, only thing I can see being a reasonable 'nerf' is the weight. It seems too light to me - not that I don't appreciate the cooldown bonus for more power-based classes.

Yup! GI with Piranha is just nasty.
Armour piercing rounds, smart choke, and extended barrel with hunter mode evolved with accuracy and rate of fire and the damage buff with proxy mine and tactical cloack make this combination just nutty.

Use Smart Choke V, and use a class with some sort of accuracy buffing. Becomes mid range meat grinder.

I don't really get why this shotgun gets so much "nerf it!" shouts. It's good, but you have to use it a certain way to fully benefit from it. The recoil and spread require you to be a CQC specced character, for one. Yes, yes, we all know about the smart choke. But you can't consider a weapon OP because it suddenly becomes good when you put a weapon mod on it. I consider its inaccuracy to be a fair drawback, without the choke. For most classes this means the choke is a must, so that leaves out use of something like damage or armor piercing mod.

People think the Piranha's lack of accuracy isn't that much of a drawback because it is easy to keep yourself alive on CQC. And I agree, but that doesn't make the gun overpowered. Simply means it's good when fighting on close range. The problem arises when the Piranha is used by a character with accuracy bonuses (GI, N7 Destroyer or Turian Soldier), as the effective range of the gun is greatly increased when coupled together with the Smart Choke.
As I've repeated several times in this thread, the cause of all these problems is the way BioWare implemented the accuracy system.

Hmm, time to test turian soldier maybe...
Or I could give it to my Destroyer, if I will be able to say goodbye to Claymore

it's not the gun that's OP. it's the GI that's powerful. and we get another topic like this again. it has been talked about a lot before.
true true.
im just glad there arent too many folks bragging about how awesome they are and they only play the gi. it would be pretentious.

It's too close to being an Auto Win stick though.
Not really. The damage output is high at close range, but it ends up getting a lot of average players killed. At mid-long it does pretty pitiful damage if you aren't an accuracy booster, even with a Smart Choke.
It's not anywhere close to a win stick in the manner that GI + Krysae was.
This. It's nowhere near the old krysae.
Krysae was easy to use and killed everything AT range, lets not forget the noob friendly air burst... the Piranha is no where near the pre nerf Krysae, agreed

Honestly, I refuse to use this build. It's insanely OP and just a noob thing to do. Doody has a point. I leave any lobby with a Piranha GI because I know it's going to be a boring game with nothing to kill. If you're going to use this build - go to Platinum or just solo.

I'm not disagreeing with that at all, and fully understand that it doesn't have to be a drawback. But as I said, this is when used with the appropiate set up. People call nerf because the gun can be used effectively very well if you're playing the right setup. Its a great shotgun for sure, but play it on a class that has no stablity or accuracy bonus and without a smartchoke. Then play it on a class with a build tailored for the role of a CQC specialist. There is a noticable difference.
Yeah it can be absolutely beastly but you can't just pick it up and use it as-is with whatever character you want and have the same exact results. People tend to base its 'value' off of how well it plays on these classes and builds that are practically tailored to work in harmony with this weapon. It's a bit like being mad at light pistols for making a caster so fast on cooldown.
Instead of nerfing the gun they could reduce the effectiveness of the smart choke or reduce the accuracy bonus of some classes. I wouldn't like that, not saying they should or anything, just saying don't blame the Piranha, blame the boosts that enable it to be so effective, if you're going to blame anything. Not that you should. Like I said, it shouldn't get a nerf just because its effective when used on special-specced characters. You need to have it based off its useness solo, as just a gun, without any additional mods or buffs, character or otherwise.
Its unfair to call nerf on a weapon because of how powerful it can be when used with certain mods and character builds. It's like punishing someone for playing a build effectively and optimizing synergy. If the piranha was as beastly on any other class or build as it is on, say, a Destroyer with rate of fire, accuracy, and damage then sure, the weapon needs to be toned down a bit. But I don't see a problem with it being 'good' on characters practically built specifically to take advantage of such weapons. That just seems like a smart way to play the game to me.
But thats just my two cents.

Well invincibility with ability to outdamage any other class in the game is pretty OP. Maybe they should nerf the class then.
