Have no Valve titles, so this is non-issue for me; am content with Bioware tales.

Steamworks? Hardly a better option than Origin, all things considered.

Then you obviously have not considered all things.

I think that article was quite poorly written the way it tosses around things like EA trying to purchase Valve (which was years ago and not at all relevant to today's news).

It may have a marginally less onerous EULA than Origin, but it's still not very customer-friendly.  Until Steam's terms of service say that I actually own the game I buy rather than trying to contrive some excuse that I'm really renting it, I regard Valve and Newell as part of the problem, not the solution.  "Not as bad" doesn't equate to being good.

Yeah Valve gets up to some annoying things and cant count to three and all.

However I will take them over EA or BiowarEA any day of the week.
At least they dont treat me like a criminal or produce complete garbage and slap a tag of "ART" on it.

Here's why Gabe Newell can make a statement like that: because they're raking in a ton of money through Valve and don't actually have to worry about where they're getting financing financing for their next project or letting a gazillion years go by before the release of HL2 Episode 3 (or HL3 if they ever get around to it). Valve is in a unique position, unlike your average dev.

Valve is also privately owned they answer to no one. Valve doesn't even any kind of manager postition and the like which allows for creative freedom. I think that also helps a lot.

I wonder if the same couldn't be said for a lot of directors and managers. The ones that have no real connection with the product their company is selling -- do they actually add anything of value? I have my doubts.

Yup, their greatest weakness is also their strength.

They don't exactly have to meet the deadlines set by a publisher, so they can experiment and do their own things as long as they stay profitable by pushing out quality products.

And no, Valve's games are much much less buggy than EA's games. I have played CS:S since it came out, besides the hit delay causes by internet latency, there are waaaay less bugs than other EA multiplayer games like Medal of Honor, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3.

That is a very admirable statement to make actually. God knows EA has bought, devoured and  digested enough awesome studios. I'm finding Origin and Bioware hardest to forgive..but there were many others.
Actually, has anyone made a list of Studios that EA bought and brought down?

Local gaming mag had a very interesting column that kinda touches the subject here. Writer complained how nowadays, with EA Activision or at the very least Ubisoft having morphed most of everybody in their gluttonous bodies,  interviewing a dev is often a very boring event. If Studio you work for has sold her independence away your days of saying whatever and whenever you want about your game is over. Instead of being able to passionately and freely speak of your creation you are now in leach with a length determined by PR and Marketing. "Yeah we have a multilayer in our game!! But unfortunatelly I can't speak more of it yet! But just you wait til E3 omg you love it"
..Writer specificially mentions a..change in interviewing Bioware guys btw.

Gabe has a genuinely strong comprehension and understanding of his customers, and you can tell in most interviews with him. Valve's one of the few gaming companies where I never asked "Why the heck did you do that?".

And on the other side of the fence...

I love watching people defending EA.

Its like watching people defending a person eating blob:

Defender: No seriously! It does not eat kids!
-monster eat a kid-
D: Welll...its just one kid ...not that many really...
-monster eats a bus full of kids-
D: Those kids were not so important really!
-monster eats an entire school full of kids-
D: ITS NOT THAT BAD REALLY DONT LOOK AT IT!

Funny and sad at the same time
