So, anybody seen the movie? If you not, I suggest you should. Comparing this Holmes to the one you see in the mini-series, this movie really exceeded my expectations. I was really reluctant to see this at first. I had to be insisted to watch and it didn't disappoint. I was especially surprised by Watson. He was treated as an important character. He wasn't, how you say, just "there". He was more, well, important. And Holmes was portrayed with actually flaws this time. The movie was just damn good.

So what are your thoughts on the movie? Did you see it yet? What aspects did you like? Discuss.

I love the Doyle stories. Haven't seen much portrayal of Holmes outside of a few audio dramatizations of the Doyle stories.

I saw the film and absolutely loved it. I was underwhelmed by Avatar on so many levels (it was still an ok film but by no means Cameron's best, nor any revelation) but Sherlock Holmes was a real winner. It exceeded my high hopes!

Well, he is an interesting idea for a villain. Though the character itself mainly just scowls his way for most of the movie. Now  what the villain does and how he executes his scheme throughout the movie is very intriguing.

Trying hard to word this without spoilers -

the trailers do not do this movie justice.  They cut together sequences and dialog that are entirely misleading.

Gah, how to say this without ruining anything.

Hmmm.

Ah!

Think of the Indiana Jones films, or episodes of Brave and the Bold, or a season of Buffy or Angel.  The movie is like them - it starts in the middle of a case for Holmes, and then the thrust of the movie is about another case whilst the end sets up a new case.
Whereas the central motivation of the film is portraying the friendship between Holmes and Watson.

The villain - is adequately a challenge, and in the story more than menacingly enough.  But there's a backline to the story, kind of like a plot thread arcing across a year or more of a comic book series, that is present before the start of the film, weaves through it, and is glaringly left dangling at the end all but demanding a sequel.

Someone in this thread said that Holmes is another Star Trek.  In a certain sense, I'm very inclined to agree.

Easily one of my favorite films of the year (up with District 9 and Star Trek.)

I'll see it sometime this next week or weekend. I'd completely forgotten thanks to Avatar sucking me in.

I liked the movie. It was pretty decent. Not one of Guy Ritchie's best, but it certainly wasn't his worst (RocknRolla I'm looking at you).

I loved the two movies Christopher Lee did as Holmes.

I might have to get this when it comes out on DVD.

Its not jeremy brett and for obvious reasons no longer can be, therfore this foul creation must be destroyed and never spoken of again. Do not go and see it!
